Description of Sarah Brightman - One Night in Eden:
It's hard to know what to make of this full-length, lavishly produced concert by Sarah Brightman, a singer and performer who seems to have been born a half-century too late. Had she come on the scene in the 1950s, when Broadway musicals were a career stepping-stone to recording contracts and TV variety-show guest appearances, Brightman could have had a Julie Andrews-type career. But Brightman, one-time companion of Andrew Lloyd Webber (who gave her the starring role in Broadway's The Phantom of the Opera), is trying to find her concert market a decade after her Phantom success. One Night in Eden, a live performance of a solo album, has elaborate, stagey set pieces that look like a bizarre cross between Stevie Nicks and Madonna. And Brightman has the musical taste of a pretentious Celine Dion (she even sings Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" in Italian, as though this gives it class). Her pudgy build isn't enhanced by the half-dozen gowns (she favors the Pre-Raphaelite) she changes into in a show that is apparently for fans only. --Marshall Fine

Sarah Brightman - One Night in Eden Reviews:
BIRTH OF A TRUE DIVA 5 Star Review
2009-09-21 - In America's pop culture, any woman with an attractive face and figure, regardless of singing talent, may become known as a "diva." In the traditional sense, the word is reserved for beautiful women with extraordinary operatic voices. This is the concert that establishes Sarah Brightman as a traditional diva. Her appearance is stunning and her voice is off the charts.

Early in the concert, Brightman explains that she wrote many letters to the composer of the instrumental NELLA FANTASIA before he consented to allow words to be put to it. She sings it with delicate beauty, and it is fast becoming a classical standard.

Right after NELLA FANTASIA she does NESSUN DORMA, arguably the most difficult song in the world. If there is another woman who does this traditional tenor song, I do not know who she is. In my opinion, Brightman's version of the song does not take second place to anyone, not even the legendary Pavarotti.

This concert has been criticized for the background music. This is trivial subject to focus on, but I think the supporting choral group, consisting of African young men, lends perfect harmony to Brightman in ONLY AN OCEAN AWAY and DELIVER ME. The racially-mixed South African audience apparently agreed with me, for there is an explosive burst of applause at the end of DELIVER ME.

Brightman does IL MIO CUORE VA, the Italian version of Celine Dion's MY HEART WILL GO ON, in a way that Dion never could. Brightman's voice is overwhelming as it builds to an operatic crescendo in the third verse that is completely out of reach for a pop singer like Dion.

Brightman is in such great command of MUSIC OF THE NIGHT that it's evident she is telling the truth when she says Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the song for her voice.

She does TIME TO SAY GOODBYE solo and does it flawlessly. By this time, in 1999, the wondrous duet with Andrea Bocelli had gone gold or platinum in an amazing 21 nations with over 50-million total sales.

Brightman's demeanor during the concert is not charismatic, but the recorded interview at the end is a must-watch for fans who want to see another side of her personality. Her banter with a lion cub, while a tape of her haunting French song UN JOUR IL VIENDRA plays in the background, is priceless.

    BRAVO 5 Star Review
2009-02-07 - I think Marshall Fine, the reviewer Amazon chose to ridicule "One Night In Eden" by Sarah Brightman takes himself too seriously.
I'm sure he really believes his thoughts are higher than our thoughts and his insights are enlightening.
But for me, Marshall Fine is just ordinary bore and the concert is not well defined by him.
Like any work of art it's is a personal thing.
If it touches you in some positive way and makes your world a little better, you and you alone decide it's worth.
I enjoyed the concert, it was moving, entertaining and fun.
    So, BRAVO to Sarah Brightman.

a fantastic live performance 5 Star Review
2009-02-02 - this live dream is a fantasy off emotions i love sarah brightman she is a amazing singer

Great as always 5 Star Review
2009-01-12 - What can I say, this woman is a goddess her voice is amazing, the show isn't as big and extravagant as Harem for instance, but she can stand in an empty stage with a microphone and it would still be amazing, it's all about the voice, but I would olny recomend this DVD to people who already know Sarah, if you are a new fan you should get the Harem DVD.

    Sarah's DVD 4 Star Review
2008-10-06 - just a short interview is what you get from Sarah, except from the concert itself... more extras would be nice
