Editorial Review: Studio: New Line Home Video Release Date: 09/23/2008 Rating: R Sex and the City - The Movie (Widescreen Edition) Reviews: watchable, but a thin story, and unpleasantly overmade up actresses 2009-12-31 - I would rate this about a 2.5 stars, so I have been generous in allowing it 3 here - and that is really only for nostalgia's sake.
I found the movie watchable, but not engrossing. All the characters are simply PLASTERED in make up - which might be ok on tv, but on the big screen they look almost grotesque. In britain they have a term about people with too much orange fake tan, having been 'tangoed' - a phrase made famous by a very virulently orange coloured drink. Well these girls have been tangoed = they are overly made up orange people.
The storylines just seemed incredibly forced. Carrie is marrying Big - Big gets cold feet, rings her mobile repeatedly (which Carrie has lost) and so doesn't make it to the alter. All he wanted to know was that they were OK. Oh whatever. Would a woman REALLY want to marry a man who kept leaving her, even marrying someone else? I mean all that happened before, but surely, once she has been left at the altar that would have to be that. What a dreadul man - what on earth does she see in him but martyrdom.
Meanwhile Cynthia Nixon's character is facing her husband having an affair, "it didn't mean anything" and thank god she just leaves him - BANG - out the door. But then after dragging our way through the whole movie, she goes to counselling and then forgives him, becuase he has forgiven her for her sins. Oh great. Martyrdom again.
Samantha just wants Me time, and leaves the man who adores her - opening the way for, of course, another sequel.
The make up will only get thicker, and the story lines thinner the longer this goes on. Geriatric sex in the City anyone? The TV series was great, the movie just doesn't work - the story lines are appalling.
Sex and the City 2009-12-30 - You'll really enjoy this movie. This movie had me completely involved for 2.5 hours! It was everything I expected. Humor, Pain, Friendship, Love. It was definitely memorable.
great movie! 2009-12-27 - If you are a fan of the show you will like this movie! It picks up where the show left off, which is exactly what I wanted it to do.
enjoyable, but socially irresponsible 2009-12-11 - Sex in the city is a result of women's lib that began in the sixties (or is that cities?) that resulted in all sorts of problems for modern women in relationships, but also resulted in a lot of positive steps for women in the workplace.
This is the result - a movie and show that some women in today's culture can relate to. And this is why this show is popular - it glamorizes something that many women can relate to. On the other hand, you could argue, that it may promote selfishness, unrealistic expectations about life in general, sexual promiscuity, and may push women into this type of behavior by making them think they are prima donnas because they deserve the best in life.
Regardless of the social content, I found this film to be enjoyable.. even if it was a little more pornographic than I was expecting (not saying I'm complaining of course... but still). Read some of henry Mackow on the subject and his take on the show.. [...]
Digital copy NO LONGER WORKS!!!!! 2009-12-05 - Buyers beware that the digital copy of the movie is no longer good. I popped the disc into my computer, entered the code, and received a message that said the offer for the digital copy had expired!!! Seriously?!?! Then maybe they shouldn't advertise that it includes a digital copy!!! So, half of this product no longer exists. Kind of lame, if you ask me.
