  • Editorial Review:
A vicious hate crime at an elite New England college thrusts the new dean of students into the investigation. When charged with maintaining order on campus, she is forced to examine her own feelings about race. Based on the critically acclaimed play, Spinning Into Butter is a compelling movie that examines the emotional fallout of prejudice within the cloistered walls of academia.

    Spinning into Butter Reviews:
    Liberal Propaganda 1 Star Review
2009-12-05 - The hate crime that started the hoopla wasn't really a crime at all, but rather a malicious note taped to the locker of a black student. It catapulted the school into a proverbial "mountain out of a molehill" uproar.

The white school administrators vow to track down and punish the white racist who dared insult one of their black students as well as tarnish their perfectly diverse "we all get along" image. They succeed only in making themselves look stupid while alienating the black students further with their condescending, overly-protective, superior behavior. Despite their fever in trying to keep the OMG!/tragic!/horrible! locker incident hush-hushed, a reporter appears out of nowhere to make things public. Is this where the tension is supposed to mount? Well, it doesn't.

Unless you're insane you'll never guess who put the note on the locker in the first place, or the reason why, but I doubt you'll care. The ending is totally foolish and pathetically sick, and it's sure to insult anybody, black or white, who retains a moderate degree of intelligence.

Spinning Into Butter makes a mockery of people of all races, but it panders very well to those suffering from White Guilt Syndrome. The ending actually angered me with its absurdity. It's a case of "damned if we do and damned if we don't", blown out of proportion and fed to us as tidbits of wisdom by the Hollywood left. Ridiculous.

If other reviewers see anything redeeming or insightful -- anything more than poor acting, a weak plot and a stupid ending -- then goody for them. They're no doubt white liberals needful of punishment for their crimes against black people. Either that or they don't get out much.

This movie is the pits. Seriously.

    I'm Impressed 4 Star Review
2009-11-21 - I had never heard of this story, nor did I know it was originally a play by Rebecca Gilman. I saw the DVD in the video store with Sarah Jessica Parker on the front cover.

The movie does keep a bit of a play atmosphere, and the topics are spot on. Prepare to be provoked and get buttons pushed. I thought it was a refreshingly blunt piece - better than "Crash" - in my opinion, and the story is engaging. None of that abstract hidden agenda stuff. It gets right to the point and drags the issue out into the open.

Basic plot: a hate crime is committed at a New England college which sends the school into media chaos and causes the Dean of Students (Sarah Jessica Parker) to have to deal with her own issues of race.

Sarah Jessica does a pretty decent job in this, and so does Mykelti Williamson. Their on screen chemistry is great.

OMG ... so bad ... 2 Star Review
2009-09-29 - sorry to say, i expected my foot to be part of this movie, that's why i ordered it. but it does make brooklyn college look really nice.
