Editorial Review:
Screwed was another nail in the coffin of former Saturday Night Live wisecracker Norm MacDonald, following his dismal previous film, Dirty Work. However, while Screwed isn't particularly funny (the jokes about dentures, dog poop, and dead bodies are pretty much as old as the hills), the plot exerts a perverse interest; for most of the movie, it's genuinely unpredictable. MacDonald plays Willard, the butler-chauffer, all-purpose flunky of Mrs. Crock, the wealthy, penny-pinching owner of a pastry company. Fed up with her abuse, Willard and his friend Rusty (David Chappelle from Blue Streak and 200 Cigarettes) connive to kidnap her dog Muffin. But Muffin escapes and returns home; the ransom note is assumed to be for Willard himself. Rusty and Willard run with the idea, sending in a videotape of himself being held prisoner. When a detective starts getting a little too close, they panic and decide to fake Willard's death... Okay, none of it makes much sense, but in a world of ridiculously formulaic movies that slavishly follow every screenwriting cliché, Screwed seems like a brief oasis of narrative invention. Of course, it still isn't funny. And by the end, it's lost whatever spark of imagination that got it started. Too bad. It's written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the screenwriters responsible for Problem Child, but also for Ed Wood and The People vs. Larry Flynt--they should stick to biographies. --Bret Fetzer
Screwed [Region 2] Reviews:
Screwed VHS -Starring Norm Macdonald,Dave Chappelle, Danny Devito,Hilarious Movie!
2009-11-06 - Extremely Funny movie with Norm,Danny Devito, and Chappelle, Norm stars as a butler who's boss is very cheap and mean, also Cameo from the dude from the Jeffersons! Great, gross and silly. very funny.
"Screwed"
2009-04-15 - This movie is great! The cast is accomplished but I don't remember the movie getting a lot of press when it came out. Elaine Stritch is a Broadway Diva who has stolen enough scenes to be charged with Grand Larceny and does a great job as the evil boss that we've all had at one time or another. Norm McDonald is the perfect straight man for Dave Chappelle's zany humor. Danny DeVito is the insane morgue attandant "Grover Cleaver." Watch what happens when Willard Fillmore and Rusty P Hayes kidnap a turd---then try to avoid getting "Screwed."
Funny
2008-07-27 - I like anything with Norm in it. It had it's funny parts and is as good as any "new blockbuster" comedy out today. I would give it a go and kidnap a turd!
Slight edge over Dirty Work
2007-04-06 - Hilarious movie for anyone who loves Chappelle and McDonald. The old lady makes the movie though, perfect casting ther.e ;) ENJOY!
One of those films that's so stupid it's actually pretty funny!
2007-03-12 - Anyone who's ever worked for a tyrant should be able to appreciate this film. Norm McDonald plays a much abused 2nd generation servant for Ms. Crock, a mean old pie baroness. Dave Chapelle plays his equally dimwitted friend. Together these two bufoons concoct the idea to kidnap Ms. Crock's beloved dog. The plan goes awry and people think that her servant, Norm McDonald has been kidnapped. Chapelle and McDonald have to adapt to their scheme to convince Ms. Crock, who really couldn't care less, to pay the same ransom for a human. Things continue to go wrong and it's one hilarious blunder after another.
This is basically a very fun movie and I would recommend it for young children if not for some of the sexual references. I also think some female senior citizens might take umbrage at the copious use of derogatory appellatives such as: hag, prune, crone, etc.
