  • Editorial Review:
Ted (Ben Stiller) is still in love with his high school prom date, Mary (Cameron Diaz), even though it's been years after the humiliating incident that cut their date short. Ted hires Pat, a private detective (Matt Dillon) to track her down, but Pat ends up falling in love with her too, starting a battle for Mary's heart.

Description of There's Something About Mary (Widescreen Edition):
There's Something About Mary is one of the funniest movies in years, recalling the days of the Zucker-Abraham-Zucker movies, in which (often tasteless) gags were piled on at a fierce rate. The difference is that cowriters and codirectors Bobby and Peter Farrelly have also crafted a credible story line and even tossed in some genuine emotional content. The Farrelly brothers' first two movies, Dumb and Dumber and Kingpin, had some moments of uproarious raunch, but were uneven. With Mary, they've created a consistently hilarious romantic comedy, made all the funnier by the fact that you know that they know that some of their gags go way over the line.

Cameron Diaz stars as Mary, every guy's ideal. Ben Stiller plays a high-school suitor still hung up on Mary years later; the obstacles standing between him and her include a number of psychotic suitors, a miserable little pooch, and, oh yeah, a murder charge. The Farrellys' admittedly simplistic camera work, which adapts easily to a TV screen, and the fact that you'll likely laugh yourself so silly over certain scenes you'll want to replay them to see what you were missing while you were busy convulsing, make this a perfect video movie. --David Kronke

There's Something About Mary (Widescreen Edition) Reviews:
a complete waste of time 4 Star Review
2009-09-17 - This was the most unfunny alleged "comedy" I have ever seen. I can't say I laughed once, or even smiled, although I did wince at the famous zipper scene. I think my most common emotion was puzzlement that anyone would think any of this movie was funny. And it's not because I don't like offensive, tasteless humor. I laughed throughout "South Park," which had something to offend everyone, but still managed to be uproarious in its gross-out humor. Cameron Diaz was unbelievably cute, so it's no wonder all the guys were hot for her. But Ben Stiller has been playing nerdy, neurotic guys for too long. With Stiller and Meara for parents, what happened to his comedy genes? Matt Dillon was terrific; I didn't even recognize him. I have no idea what the critics who liked this movie were thinking of. Or even not thinking of. Don't bother.

Very Very Funny, Frequently Vulgar But Enjoyable Nonetheless! 4 Star Review
2009-08-13 - This is my favourite Farrelly Brothers film as it still manages to entertain without dumbing down too much to the audience unlike "Dumb and Dumber" which I hate with a passion. This comedy also has a nice moral in it about the difference between love and obsession/lust and the merits of perseverence in relationships; the outrageousness of the antics of Mary's suitors is what makes the film work as well as the daringness at the time to use so many taboo topics just slays me everytime I watch this. I also liked the tribute to Nat King Cole in that other criminally underrated comedy spoof of the Western genre "Cat Ballou" although Nat's counterpart does a whole lot more singing than Richman's who just plays the drum here. Needless to say, Richman isn't worthy to carry Nat King Cole's sandals when it comes to vocal and star quality.

This dvd is strangely bare special features-wise for a Special Edition although the picture quality is very good and so is the sound quality coming in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound mode. Certainly controversial and not everyone's cup of tea but for those who are able to not take this film too seriously as it is a comedy after all may find that this film falls under that rare quality of a comedy that ages pretty well.

2009-08-04 - This is a movie that is worth watching over and over again. Ben Still always wondered what happened to Mary after the high school prom and he eventually finds out and tries to hook up with her again. Very funny movie.

    Wal Mart 4 Star Review
2008-12-20 - This is a magnificent movie. The breadth of its depthness is intoxicating. The view from above and below...marvelous. The dialog is Shakesperean in it's scope and Capraesque in it's quirkiness. However, the penis scene failed to move me since I am a woman of few scruples and I cheat at Scrabble.

Love this movie... 5 Star Review
2008-11-04 - No matter how many times I watch this DVD it never fails to knock me to the floor with laughter. The Ben Stiller -v- Puffy always gets me. Interesting to see the behind the scenes stuff too. Classic movie.
