  • Editorial Review:
This massive 1977 adaptation by director Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) of Cornelius Ryan's novel features an all-star cast in an epic rendering of a daring but ultimately disastrous raid behind enemy lines in Holland during the Second World War. A lengthy and exhaustive look at the mechanics of warfare and the price and futility of war, the film is almost too large for its aims but manages to be both picaresque and affecting, particularly in the performance of James Caan. The impressive cast includes Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, and Liv Ullmann among others. While not a classic war film, it nevertheless manages to be a consistently interesting and exciting adventure. --Robert Lane

A Bridge Too Far [Region 2] Reviews:
    great buy 5 Star Review
2009-12-16 - Overall a great price for a blu-ray and a classic movie. The fact that the editing of the film differs from others had little impact on the purchase. Would be happy to purchase again.

An intense, historically accurate war film 4 Star Review
2009-11-26 - This was an ambitious film that succeeds in its mission of entertaining the viewer, but does not quite make it into the top-tier of war films. Operation Market-Garden was conceived by General Montgomery as an attempt to drive a nail into the coffin of the German Wehrmacht, and take the allies to the Rhine. Instead, the operation failed and remains controversial to this day. James Caan and Sean Connery in particular turn in excellent performances among an all-star cast.

I suppose what deprives this film of its fifth star is the simple fact that (in my opinion) it has a bit too much action and not enough characterization and storyline. There is just a lot of combat in this film, which is, after all to be expected. And the action somewhat swamps the storyline. Nevertheless, this is an excellent film that war-film buffs will enjoy more than once. RJB.

A Bridge to Far 5 Star Review
2009-10-26 - I just returned from Nijmegen Netherlands; we attended several memorial celebrations all over the area in honor of 65 years of freedom from the Nazi invasion. I decided to watch this movie, it was excellent. God bless America and thank you GI's!

One of the best World War II films 5 Star Review
2009-08-10 - 'A Bridge Too Far' is truly epic. It is really one of the last sprawling epics about World War II before 'Saving Private Ryan' which had a more intimate story. I really like how historically accurate 'A Bridge Too Far' tries to be and it is really great to see all of the legendary actors at work. Edward Fox is one of the standouts as Horrocks and he brings a real character to life. Sean Connery is also very good as Urquhart. Anthony Hopkins is quite good as John Frost. Robert Redford gets to star in the most stirring scene for American viewers that depicts the assault in rubber boats across the Waal river by the 82nd Airborne. The courage displayed in the assault was truly legendary. The film really does a good job in depicting this crucial segment of the battle. Also the suicidal SS armored vehicle assault at the bridge at Arnhem is well depicted and shows how tough the British paratroopers were and the true arrogance that the Germans displayed numerous times during the war.

Only wish that a DVD version could come out that was truly cleaned up and remastered. The movie deserves better picture and sound on DVD.

The film has good acting, great actors, and very good battle scenes. Highly recommended to all movie and military history buffs!

not a pretty picture. 4 Star Review
    2009-07-25 - A Bridge Too Far

I thought that this movie was very realistic. Probably too realistic to be popular, but hey. Wars aren't nice. Anyone who has found a dead body by smell, as I have, knows that.

Recommended for anyone who wants too see what war is really like, not a pretty picture.
