Editorial Review:
Released three months after her murder in 1995, Dreaming of You introduced the Tejano queen to the mainstream pop audience. Four new tunes recorded with producers Keith Thomas and Guy Roche envisioned Selena as a dance-pop diva similar to Janet Jackson or Mariah Carey, but with a Latin twist. Far more arresting are the two classic mariachi numbers and a bilingual duet with David Byrne recorded for the movie Don Juan DeMarco, in which Selena had a bit part. The contrast between her passionate invitation to "come dance with me" and Byrne's nerdy white-guy delivery indicated her wide-open creative potential. The rest of the album consists of remixes of Selena's Latin-pop hits, including a masterful version of "Techno Cumbia" that bring out the hip-hop and reggae flavors in the groove. The tragedy was that such a promising introduction also served as a sad farewell. --Rick Mitchell
Dreaming of You Reviews:
Wonderful CD
2009-06-01 - I really loved the movie "Selena", so I wanted to get the CD. I found it on Amazon.com and purchased it from a wonderful company who gives back to it's community. The CD arrived as they described, in it's original packaging and in excellent condition. It only took a few days to arrive and was intact. I would diffently purchase from this company again.
1 OF DA BEST SELENA ALBUMS EVER!!!!
2009-05-30 - BEFORE THERE WAS J.LO, SHAKIRA OR BEYONCE, THERE WAS SELENA, THE BEAUTIFUL REIGNING "QUEEN OF TEJANO MUSIC" WHO WAS TRAGICALLY GUNNED DOWN 14 YRS AGO & TODAY HER LEGACY CONTINUES TO GROW & IF YOU JUST RECENTLY DISCOVERED HER MUSIC OR HAVE BEEN A LONG TIME FAN WHEN SHE WAS STILL LIVING YOU WILL LOVE THIS CD, IT HAS SOME OF HER GREATEST SPANISH HITS ON IT & ALOT OF SOME OF THE POP MUSIC THAT SHE RECORDED BEFORE HER PASSING, IT GIVES YOU A GLIMPSE OF WHERE SHE WAS HEADED MUSICALLY AND HOW SHE TRYING TO CONCUR HER "DREAM" BY CROSSING OVER TO THE ENGLISH MARKET, SADLY, WE WILL NEVER HEAR ANY NEW MATERIAL FROM HER BUT IF YOU ARE NOT A HUGE SELENA FAN, I GUARANTEE YOU WILL BE AFTER LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM, SELENA'S VOCALS ARE AMAZING, IF SHE WAS STILL HERE, SHE WOULD CONQUER THE WORLD AND THESE FOLLOWING SONGS SHOW HER AMAZING VOCAL RANGE:
-I COULD FALL IN LOVE (HER VOCAL RANGE IS AMAZING, IT'S A BEAUTIFUL LOVE BALLAD; HAD SHE LIVED THE SHOOTING, THERE'S NO DOUBT IN MY MIND, SHE WOULD WIN A GRAMMY FOR THIS SONG & THIS SONG IS ALSO A SAD REMINDER THAT SHE IS NO LONGER WITH US, BUT IT IS BEAUTIFUL, JUST LIKE SHE WAS)
-DREAMING OF YOU (AMAZING VOCAL RANGE ALSO, ALSO A BEAUTIFUL LOVE BALLAD,1 OF THE LAST SONGS SHE RECORDED BEFORE HER TRAGIC PASSING & 1 OF MY FAV SONGS BY HER, HAD SHE NOT BEEN GUNNED DOWN AT HER PRIME,SHE WOULD HAVE WON A GRAMMY FOR THIS SONG ALSO, EVERY TIME I LISTEN TO THIS SONG, IT'S A SAD REMINDER THAT SHE IS NO LONGER WITH US, BUT I AM VERY HAPPY THAT SHE LEFT BEAUTIFUL MUSIC BEHIND, LIKE THIS BEAUTIFUL SONG)
-I'M GETTING USED TO YOU (ALSO, 1 OF MY FAVORITES, BEAUTIFUL BEAT, ALSO HER VOCAL RANGE IS AMAZING)

IF YOU ARE A HUGE SELENA FANATIC, I RECOMMEND YOU ALSO BUY "SELENA:ONES" BECAUSE IT HAS ALL HER HITS & YOU SHOULD ALSO BUY THE "SELENA:ONES" WITH THE DVD BECAUSE IT HAS THE MAJORITY OF SOME OF HIT MUSIC VIDEO'S & YOU SHOULD ALSO BUY "SELENA: ANTHOLOGY" IF YOU LIKE ALOT OF HER SPANISH HITS OR REMIXED VERSIONS OF HER SONGS, IT ALSO COMES WITH 3 DISCS & THERE ARE SOME GR8 UNRELEASED ENGLISH POP SONGS & LATIN MUSIC ON IT! YOU ALSO, SHOULD BY "SELENA REMEMBERED" (THE DVD/CD), IF YOU JUST RECENTLY DISCOVERED HER MUSIC BECAUSE, IT SHOWS LOTS OF FOOTAGE OF HER PERFORMING, WITH FAMILY, BEING INTERVIEWED, ETC. BUT THIS CD IS A MUST FOR ANY SELENA FAN THAT HAS JUST DISCOVERED HER MUSIC, BUT OVERALL THIS IS A GR8 ALBUM FROM THE MOST BELOVED LATINA SINGER EVER, THE LATE GREAT SELENA QUINTANILLA-PEREZ (1971-1995); HAD SHE LIVED SHE WOULD BE THE BIGGEST STAR IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW, BUT LEGENDS NEVER DIE & SHE WILL ALWAYZ LIVE ON THROUGH HER MUSIC & THROUGH HER FANS, HER STAR WILL NEVER FADE & SHE WILL ALWAYZ LIVE ON IN OUR HEARTS, HER DEATH, ROBBED US OF GR8 MUSIC, WE WILL NEVER KNOW HER FULL POTENTIAL, BUT WE KNOW THAT SHE HAD A BRIGHT FUTURE THAT WAS CUT SHORT BY A COWARD OVER SOMETHING SENSELESS AND I GUARANTEE U THAT HAD SHE LIVED WOULD BE STILL THE BIGGEST LATINA STAR IN THE WORLD!!! R.I.P. SELENA QUINTANILLA-PEREZ (1971-1995)(DA GREATEST LATINA SINGER EVER)!!!!
And it still remains...
2009-01-08 - I bought this album in 1995 when I was 12 years old--- I waited in line for 8 hours to get it!! I re-bought it 1999 and again in 2002--- I recently noticed it was missing, so I once again bought another one! I truly love this album.... it's definitely a classic.
"I could never get used to living without you"
2008-02-18 - After seeing the touching biopic of her life, I was interested in learning more about Selena. I read books on her, read biographies about her on the internet, saw interviews on YouTube, and, of course, listened to her music. "Dreaming of You" was one of the first albums by Selena that I purchased and I listened to it repeatedly. Did I listen to her music because I felt obligated to because she was killed? Yes and no. I felt such remorse after seeing the movie, but when I listen to her music, I truly enjoy it a whole lot. This chanteuse had a lot of personality in her voice, not to mention, she helped an "A" in Spanish! There are a few ballads, mid-tempos, and even some up-beat numbers here. She was chiefly a Tejano artist, but there are many tinges of R&B on this album. It's not hard to tell that Jennifer Lopez was heavily influenced by her.
The song "Dreaming of You" is terrific, but, somewhat eerie and haunting. This may be because they played this song in the movie just before she was murdered. The song is about having a huge crush on a male and thinking about him so much that he shows up in your dreams. The chorus, versus, lyrics, delivery and production are all stellar; this song never really gets old. "I Could Fall in Love" is also a nice song with a relaxing feel. It has hints of the Mexican sound, but there is also a large R&B influence on this mid-tempo. "Captive Heart", "I'm Getting Used to You", and "Wherever You Are" are also standout tracks. These songs are up-tempo and will have you dancing and bobbing your head uncontrollably. I absolutely love "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom!" This song is sung in Spanish, but I know all the lyrics and the complete translation! It is a very cute song and a nice way to end a great album. Some of the material here isn't that memorable. Tracks such as "Tu Solo Tu", "God's Child", and "El Toro Relajo" are decent, but far from great.
Selena did a wonderful job with "Dreaming of You." If you decide to buy it, it will get its share of play time in your CD player. Worth the money. 4 stars.
