Editorial Review:
Jason Lee, Julia Stiles and Selma Blair star in this hysterically funny romance bursting with "surprising comedy, likable characters, memorable gags and running jokes that are funny every time" (Knight Ridder)! Paul is engaged to Karen (Blair) when he meets the perfect girl, Becky (Stiles) at his bachelor party. And to make matters worse, he's just discovered that the two are cousins! Soin a situation like this, what's the guy thing to do? Tell white lies and cover things up. But asthe wedding date fast approaches, Paul finds himself falling for Becky and is faced with an impossible decision: do the right thing or lose the real thing forever!
Description of A Guy Thing:
A Guy Thing wants so desperately to be a funny thing that it turns into almost nothing at all. This movie is like an annoying party guest who won't go home, although the most loyal devotees of Julia Stiles and Jason Lee are sure to get a few good laughs. Lee's awkwardly cast (and costumed) as a husband-to-be who's about to discover he's fallen in love with the free-spirited cousin (Stiles) of his comparatively straight-laced fiancée (Selma Blair). When all the who's-who gets figured out, this decidedly unromantic comedy shifts into auto-pilot with Lee trapped in a rote series of compromising positions. Every outcome is telegraphed far in advance, and true love takes its course with numbing efficiency. Lee barely squeaks by with his dignity intact; the fact that Stiles emerges buoyantly unscathed is further proof that this beguiling actress is deservedly a star on the rise. --Jeff Shannon
A Guy Thing Reviews:
Fun Date Movie...
2009-06-08 - This isn't the best movie I've ever seen - but it makes a great day movie, unlike something like Saving Private Ryan. Funny romantic comedy.
Funny
2008-06-29 - It's pretty funny for a movie of that style. I rented and downloaded the movie for 99c. Worth the buck.
Could not stop from laughing out loud
2008-02-05 - Paul Colman (Jason Lee) is reluctantly having a bachelor party. He innocently buys a bear for an inept hula girl (Julia Stiles) that was part of the entertainment. He wakes up to find her in his bead and is fiancé on the way. From there it is one situation after another and snowballs. Will he ever straiten it out with his fiancé? And what is to become of the hula girl?
Yes the first thing you will notice is that this is formula. The whole reason we pick a genera is because we like to see variations on a formula; who can do it better and what different twist can be placed in the story and keep it on track. If this had been played with some actor that had to rely on past films reputations like Adam Sandler the film would not work.
My favorite scene was the one where Paul (with a strait face) tells Karen that the panties (obviously used) she is holding came from a bin at a discount store. She dials up the store for verification.
One added plus to the movie is Larry Miller as Minister Ferris who knew or suspected everything and could not tell. See him again when he can really branch out in "Radioland Murders" (1994) and "Undercover Blues" (1993).
Radioland Murders
Guy Thing
2008-01-24 - This is a well done romantic comedy about a chap who is going to marry a "safe' attractive girl approved by the fam but falls for a wilder one who is spontaneous, full of life and of course cannot hold a job. The problem is that she is a cousin of the chick he plans to marry.
My first copy of this film went bad so this is a replacement so it must be pretty good.
The flick has numerous hillarious scenes including one involving two of the main characters being trapped in a shower-bathtub by a snarling attack dog.
Cute movie
2007-12-11 - It's a cute movie. The actors were great. This is a fire place date movie
