Editorial Review:
It's been three years since Laundry Service transformed Shakira into an international rock diva, and we're still waiting for the official follow-up. As she toils away on her next studio album (due later this year), the Colombian temptress has kept fans distracted with a Washed and Dried special edition of her English-language breakthrough and a Grandes Exitos collection of her Spanish hits. Now comes Live & Off the Record, a lush CD/DVD package chronicling Shakira's 2003 Tour of the Mongoose. It's a must-have for Shakira fans and features her second live CD effort (following 2000's stellar MTV Unplugged). The real treat, though, is the DVD, which was filmed at a tour stop in the Netherlands. Shakira tears through tracks such as "Si Te Vas," "Inevitable," "Rules," and "Ready For the Good Times" with equal parts sensuality and animalistic ferocity. Her stage presence is positively electric. The accompanying documentary is also a revelation, capturing Shakira at her most honest and vulnerable. Highlights include the singer's bout with tendonitis (brought on by belly-dancing), an early-morning mariachi serenade from her boyfriend on Valentine's Day, and a backstage visit from novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Fans' appetites should be whetted--for a little while. --Joey Guerra
Live & Off the Record (CD & DVD) Reviews:
Shikira Live
2009-08-17 - I am a new fan of Shakira and had to go back and purchase all of her older titles. I did not find them to be as exciting as her newer music and videos. She continues to get better and I will continue to purchase the few remaining items and have already pre-ordered She-Wolf.
Excellent Concert DVD, OK Concert CD
2008-11-02 - Live DVD/CD combos are one of the best recent ideas out of the music industry. Like virtually every great rock act, Shakira's live performances have an extra quality that's missing in her studio CDs yet that extra specialness doesn't always translate onto audio. Watching the DVD, on the other hand, helps to recapture the excitement of what looks like a successful and dynamic world tour. Unlike many younger female rockers, Shakira writes and sings much of her own material and, given that she's sometimes out of breath due to her dance moves, is actually singing onstage. Those who know her only from her pop hits will probably be shocked that she does justice to AC/DC's "Back in Black." She's a serious tomboy! At a time when stadium rock is supposedly dead, Shakira is an especially charismatic singer fronting a capable band.
The DVD is the real deal here, containing a full-length live concert and some nice extras. The CD is ok, and is nice to have if you really enjoy some of the live versions and want to listen to them later. But, for me, the DVD is the reason to buy this combination and the price is definitely right.
Singing needs Coaching!
2008-08-05 - Beautiful woman, OK belly dancer, nice blonde hair, but her singing is just awful in "Live Off The Record." Even when she speaks to the audience it's really bad. She's great marketing hype, but honestly, her singing has really declined rapidly. I like her band which makes up for her weak singing. Check our her first two albums when Shakira was more serious and relied less on dying her hair, less belly dancing, and more writing substance. No wonder sellers are selling this CD+DVD album under $3.
Live
2007-09-24 - This is an older CD. My son wanted it, and he loves it all becasue of Hips Don't Lie! So if you are die hard fan, this is a must!
Great
2007-08-23 - I've missed her concert in Rotterdam and after watching the DVD I even regret more!
The CD is only a selection of the concert, but great! I have listened it for many times and still it's cheering me up!
