Editorial Review:
The sister trio SHeDAISY arrived in the late '90s riding the huge wave of Shania, Faith, and Dixie Chicks country-pop, and made a splash or two before seeming to sink out of sight. They buoyed with 2004's Sweet Right Here, which climbed to #2 on the Billboard chart, but never regained the buzz they generated with their 1999 debut, The Whole SHeBANG. Now, on their fourth effort, they've pulled out all the stops to rejuvenate their career--Kristyn Osborn, their chief songwriter, cowriting two tunes with Sheryl Crow ("Whatever It Takes," "Healing Side") and another with Don Schlitz ("In Terms of Love"). In following the dissolution of a relationship, a theme that works throughout, the sisters craft a resonant album that should ring truthfully with their primarily female fan base. They bolster it with all the trendy radio-friendly production touches (e.g., driving banjo beneath a pop arrangement, à la Keith Urban), and sell it with their usual seamless and creative vocal blend. The latter is the only thing that saves the album's most disappointing cut, "God Bless the American Housewife," an indescribably awful piece of shameless pandering, even if the lyrics are meant to be tongue-in-cheek. It's to their credit that they didn't write it, but to actually record it speaks far more poorly of them than any reviewer ever could. Other than that, this comeback effort (replete with a bold and sensitive "mistress" ballad, "She Gets What I Deserve") goes the distance to keep SHeDAISY blooming. --Alanna Nash
Fortuneteller's Melody Reviews:
Great performance, so-so sound quality
2008-05-26 - While the performances on this disc are highly enjoyable, especially the exquisite harmonizing between the sisters, they are let down by the questionable choices made in the recording. Like so many modern rock CDs, all the instruments and voices are pumped up to maximum levels then heavily compressed, leading to a flat soundstage that doesn't ever 'breathe.' Every note is right on the edge of tape saturation.
It probably sounds fine on radio/Ipod/YouTube etc., but on a high-quality stereo the results are a bit disappointing. The sound becomes brittle and fatiguing over time. The band certainly isn't at fault; it's the choices made by the producer/engineers that seem to be regrettable here.
This sound may work for some types of heavy rock, but it's inappropriate for music that should be allowed to organically breathe like female voice and a good deal of acoustic instrumentation.
In summary, I LOVED and was extremely moved by the performances and songwriting, but was let down by the sound quality.
Just good music!
2007-11-30 - I really love this CD. It's fresh and nice to just sit and listen to. There wasn't one song that made me want to push the "next" button. I liked them all. Good stuff.
Another strong effort
2007-07-26 - SheDaisy continues very strong with their most recent album, their 4th. It continues in much the same vein as "Sweet Right Here" but with even more of a rock edge to it. These sisters are simply the best country/pop group out there. This is a great CD. Here's the good songs, which is most of them:
23 DAys
I'm Taking the Wheel - great country/rock
God Bless teh American Housewife - silly but fun
Kickin In - another great country/rock tune
Healing Side - good emotive slower tune
What Do I Do Now
Burn Down the House - the last of the trio of great country/rock tunes
Excellent work by SheDaisy
The girls are back on top....
2007-07-03 - I absolutely loved this CD. I've been a fan since the beginning, and although I liked Knock On The Sky and Sweet Right Here - this disc just hits you in the face. Just like The Whole SHeBang did. Terrific songs and the girl's trademark harmonies make this one helluva collection. I can listen to the entire disc all the way through without skipping any songs!
A wonderfully Bouncy CD
2007-05-08 - Oftentimes when I listen to music, I prefer to have something that sets a particular mood. This CD, and indeed this band makes it onto my all star list for "energy" and "housecleaning" CD's. THe music is well written and bouncy with lyrics taht cut to the heart but are not too sappy.
