Editorial Review:
No longer available in the U.S., 'Doggystyle' is one of the biggest & most influential gangsta rap albums of the '90s. 'Doggystyle', Snoop Doggy Dogg's 1993 debut, was produced by his childhood friend Dr. Dre and entered the Billboard top 200 albums chart
Description of Doggystyle:
Produced by the infamous Dr. Dre with assistance from Mr. Suge Knight, Doggy Style was the first solo outing by Calvin Broadus a.k.a. Snoop Doggy Dog. Incorporating a straight gangsta vibe into the deep funk grooves pioneered by George Clinton and his Parliament-Funkadelic ensemble, Snoop and Dre dogmatically invent the "G-Funk" aesthetic. Espousing an irreverent dope, bitches, and guns mentality, Doggy Style garnered the Parental Advisory for explicit lyrics it sorely deserved. Still, Snoop's lazy-yet-acrobatic rap/drawl is distinctive and undeniably entertaining. With additional vocals from Tha Dogg Pound (Nate Dogg, Warren G, Kurupt, and Dat Nigger Daz), this disc is deceptively professional and musically quite slick. "Murder Was The Case" is practically an inner-city classic, while "Ain't No Fun" is another blunted, urban-rap anthem. Woof! --Mitch Myers
Doggystyle Reviews:
Classic Snoop
2008-09-24 - One of my all time favorites. It's the Snoop at his DO Double G, sultry rhyming best in Doggy Style.
snoop's finest!
2007-02-19 - This is one of the best hip hop albums you will ever hear. Dr. Dre puts his beats in perfect syncronization with the Dogg's lyrics. It is just so smooth. Everyone knows about the high quality of Gin and Juice and Who Am I?, but songs like Tha Shiznit, Gz and Hustlas and Pump Pump are where the album truly shines. It is extremely easy to listen to the whole album all the way through and want to listen to it again and again. A home run for hip hop and music!
SNOOP AT HIS FINEST, RAP AT ITS FINEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2006-10-07 - Look i'd just like to say that this album is classic from top to bottom. This along with The Chronic are the albums that basically got gangsta rap mainstream. There is not one second of this that I am not completely in love with, every song is an absolute classic. There are the hardcore gangsta rap songs with ill lyrics such as Tha Shiznit, Murder Was The Case, Serial Killa, For All My N***** & B******, Gz And Hustlas and Pump Pump. Then there are party songs like Gin And Juice and Who Am I. I have never heard Snoop rhyme so amazingly well as he does here then the guest appearances are all great. Plus don't forget the classic production handled by Dre. All you rap fans out there better cop this or else your not the rap fan you think you are. Also cop The Chronic, Murder Was The Case Soundtrack and All Eyez On Me.
5 Out Of 5 - Though Snoop's career after this has been hit and miss he will always have this to show as a masterpiece.
5 Stars Just Isn't Enough, I wish I could give it 5000000 stars!!!!
2006-07-21 - This an absolutely fantastic album!!! This may be the only gangsta rap album you'll ever need its so great!!! Well theres only 11 songs but they are all classics and this is definitely my favourite gangsta rap album. Well thanks to Dr Dre the production is absolutely untouchable with kick a** beats that all match Snoop's flow perfectly. Then the guest appearances are not a let down though Snoop is a million times better, they are still great. I'm speechless, I feel like buying this again its so great, I simply can't get enough of this stuff. I think its such a shame that Snoop later made such rubbish albums like Rhythm And Gangsta when he proved how incredibly talented he was in his debut.
Here are my ratings
1. Bathtub 5/10 I usually hate skits but I don't mind this one.
2. G Funk Intro 10/10 Fantastic start to the album!!! Intros don't get much better than this.
3. Gin And Juice 10/10 Classic, this is my favourite hit from the album. A fantastic song about Snoop's favourite drink.
4. Tha Shiznit 10/10 Classic, god this is absolutely incredible. Why the f*** did tjhis not become a hit.
5. Lodi Dodi 10/10 Classic, again absolutely amazing. A very laid back story about what Snoop does every day. This is one you can just chill to.
6. Murder Was The Case 10/10 Classic, a dark tale with dark beats. Another of my favourites.
7. Serial Killa 10/10 Classic, tight a** beats with great appearances by Tha Dogg Pound.
8. Who Am I? (What's My Name?) 10/10 Classic, my second favourite hit and this is another handsdown amazing song. This is the sort of song you can just nod your head to while driving.
9. For All My N***** & B****** 9/10 With no Snoop it can't get 10/10. However its a classic Dogg Pound song.
10. Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None) 10/10 Classic, fantastic song with a kick a** chorus by the legendary Nate Dogg.
11. Doggy Dogg World 10/10 Classic, my third favourite hit. Another song you can just chill to.
12. Gz And Hustlas 10/10 Classic, incredible, Snoop sounds the most angry in this one. This is another song you can just nod your head to while driving.
13. Pump Pump 10/10 Classic, full of hype like Tupac's Holler If You Hear Me. Another song you can nod your head to while driving.
I very strongly recommend this album. Trust me its worth every penny you pay for it.
Finally to Helen from Texas. I found it kind of obvious when reading your review that to write a neg comment for each song you either just made it up or got help from the title. Why don't you actually go listen to this and then tell me its wack? And the fact that you think Nelly is the realest hip hop artist ever means you know nothing about hip hop. Don't post reviews saying who you think is a real hip hop artist and who you think sucks when you know absolutely nothing about what real hip hop is.
Original Work of ART
2006-01-16 - I bought this CD in 1993 when the original version came out. It had 19 tracks, not 18 or 13. The real track 18 is "Gz Up, Hoes Down" and Track 19 is "Pump, Pump." I didn't even realize that later releases had tracks removed until I started looking for the album art for my iPod.
This album is a classic. if you want to buy it try to get the original with NINETEEN TRACKS. Don't allow yourself to miss Snoop in his full artistic form. This is definitely one of the Top Ten CD of All Time.
