EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND star Ray Romano takes a lead role alongside Kevin James (THE KING OF QUEENS) in this comic buddy movie. Playing two meat salesmen Romano and James's characters fall into a little bother and end up having to make a big sale quick before they end up in the same state as the goods they're peddling. Juliette Lewis and Burt Reynolds make brief appearances.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY Rating: R UPC: 794043103414 Manufacturer No: N10341

    Description of Grilled:
Meat connoisseurs will adore Grilled, possibly the only film dedicated exclusively to high quality beef. Maurice (Ray Romano) and Dave (Kevin James) are meat salesmen roving the San Fernando Valley, armpit of America, for clients to buy their line of prime-cut steaks. Once they get a hold of the hottest leads in town, Maurice and Dave embark on a comedic adventure spiked with danger and sexual innuendo involving transvestites, gangsters, and even Burt Reynolds, playing the macho beef lover hosting his son’s Bar Mitzvah. As soon as Grilled starts feeling like a carbon copy of Glengarry Glen Ross, some hip actors, like Juliette Lewis cast as the drunken, suicidal girlfriend of a mob ringleader, make the film cooler like Pulp Fiction. Sales made under ridiculously dire circumstances are sometimes corny, sometimes funny, odd, and surprising. Director Jason Ensler, known mostly for his work on television shows such as West Wing, South Beach, and Scrubs, has taken the formulaic salesman flick and remade it into something almost original, were it not so similar to the abovementioned two movies. Still, there are many entertaining moments in Grilled, especially when scenes of gang-related crime overlap with scenes proving these gangsters’ devotion to red meat. Eventually, carnage prevails, as Dave and Maurice teach us that the sale must be made at all costs. --Trinie Dalton

KEVIN JAMES STEALS THE SHOW 5 Star Review
    2009-06-17 - GRILLED

I remember walking around Wal-Mart one night and they were bringing out all the new releases, I decided to wait around just in case something came out that I would be interested in. I can't remember what all as out at the time but I do remember seeing this as soon as they brought it out of the box. A movie starring not only the great Kevin James but one of his best friends and the guy he broke into the business with Ray Romano starred as well. When I looked on the back I noticed that Michael Rapaport, Juliette Lewis, and Burt Reynolds, you know I bought this.

Dave [James] and Maurice [Romano] are meat salesman who go door to door trying to sell all kinds of meat and fridges. When trying to make a sell to some woman she gets a call from her friend who is suicidal, off they go to help out and try to make that sell. Dave needs to buy his daughter a birthday present and Maurice needs to finish school. But on this very hot day thinks don't work out well as they witness a murder and have to go on the run, they don't want to be killed either. The crazy thing is they still want those sales so even in danger they are pushing for sells.

Writers Larry Hankin and William Tepper really came with an original story and the meat thing driving the film was really interesting. The script has a very distinct feel to it that is hard to describe but when you see it you will know what I am talking about. Director Jason Ensler really keeps things kinda gritty and realistic and keeps unexpected things happening. The humor of this film is most likely not for every one but for those who get it this is a very fun film.

Kevin James is excellent as Dave and once again steals the show from all others with his down to earth but down and out performance. James can really act and he should try his hand at a couple of more dramatic roles, but don't leave the comedy either. Ray Romano is Maurice and he is not the Ray you watch on TV. This character is kinda driven by the opposite sex and has a bit of a mouth on him, at least compared to his TV image. Juliette Lewis as always is wonderful and proves why she is one of the greatest ever, and the same can be said about Michael Rapaport. Burt Reynolds is as much a presence on screen here as he ever was and Sofía Vergara's character may surprise you.

The humor of this film is either hit or miss depending on your taste but to me it is a very entertaining flick with a weird story. But it is a fun flick and the fact that these guys just want to sell some meat is hilarious to me considering what they go through. This movie is not for everybody but for the ones that will appreciate it is a fun flick.

Two stars is being kind. 2 Star Review
2008-07-26 - How can two amazingly funny, highly popular actors/comedians come together in a movie and have it fail so horribly? How can those same usually amusing men walk through such a dud without breathing a tiny bit of life into it? Did they not read the script when they signed on? Did they owe someone a favor? I'm sure partly to blame for this awful movie is the lack-luster script and lame plot, but one would expect a lot more than what you get in "Grilled" from Ray Romano and Kevin James. These two actors never failed to make me laugh in "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "King of Queens." I even remember laughing my head off while listening to their stand-up acts. Unfortunately their humor doesn't translate to the "big" screen. Actually, I watched it on a small screen since this pathetic excuse for a film went straight to DVD and didn't even get a chance to test its wings in the theaters. Poor test screenings should have been a hint that this movie needed help. Lots of help.

The premise had the potential to be rather amusing. Two meat salesmen struggle to find that perfect sale and in doing so get mixed up with a hit-man and his girl. Madness and mayhem ensue. Yet one usually finds amusement in madness and mayhem. None was to be found in this hour and a half waste of time.

Perhaps I'm being hard on the film, because I did giggle a time or two. I was just left wanting more and the big names couldn't lift the stinker out of the toilet. (Supporting cast included names like Juliette Lewis, Burt Reynolds and Michael Rapaport!)

I'm sad to say that even if you like Kevin James and Ray Romano, don't bother wasting the rental charge for this film. Perhaps if you're really bored and it's on TV one day it'll be worth viewing. At least the commercials would break it up

When was it filmed? 1 Star Review
2008-07-14 - I was misled by the DVD distribution date. The movie must have been made prior to the Ramano and James entry into sit coms. You kept watching thinking it might get better and it doesn't. You are distracted by the 80's type world that you don't expect. I was disapppointed in what I had hoped would be a good movie.

Everyone loves the king of ..... wait, not this one they dont 2 Star Review
2008-05-16 - Ray and Tubby play meat salesmen who wind up getting mixed up trying to sell meat to the mob and blah blah blah

The comedy is not strong, it's pretty slow in most parts, and it's not a fast paced movie.

Wait for it to be on TV.

Don't Rent or Buy if You Want Laughs -- But Don't Write it Off if You Like Quirky Black Humor 4 Star Review
    2007-12-09 -
Do NOT rent or buy this movie if you are looking for laughs.

I rented it and then read reviews. The reviews are extreme to say the least. Let me try to clear the cloud of contrast.

Those of you who love movies like Lost in Translation or other character studies may want to look into Grilled. The simple plot is a day in the life of two meat salesmen. Each are motivated to sell by different extenuating needs. The frustration of sales gone wrong adds to the sense of underlying desperation. They finally hit big time, until the bad guys come looking for the buyer and the sellers get sucked into a life and death drama.

The movie is quirky more than funny. Kevin James and Ray Romano stretch their acting muscles giving their sit-com muscles a rest. They both do a great job playing almost down and out desperate characters in a situation that could have been written for laughs or played for laughs but instead became a darkly quirky. I'm giving it four stars for originality, acting, writing and creativity.

Those of you who are language sensitive -- the F-word flies frequently. Not appropriate for children or young teens if you are concerned about sexual messages sent via film.
