Editorial Review:
The Followup to the Multi Platinum Selling Debut "Read My Lips" is an Electrifying Diverse Piece of Work. Songs were Co-written with Former Suede Guitarist Bernard Butler, Rob Davis, New Radical Gregg Alexander and Alex James. Along with her Change of Hair Colour Comes a Change in Music as Well as Ms. Bextor Mines the Sounds of 80's Electro and Brings them to the Fore in the Nils with Aplomb. The Result is Most Tasty! She Might Be Outsold by Lesser Artists, but in No Way Outclassed, as She is One Class Act. "Shoot from the Hip" is Elegant and Provocative and Boasts New Sounds and New Experiences.
Shoot from the Hip Reviews:
The Sophmore attempt
2009-07-20 - Sophie Ellis-Bextor's sophmore album was like more of a review of "Read My Lips" and "Trip the Light Fantastic" (which I loved) it was indie pop and Britpop combined. Unlike the third and first albums respectively I found myself skipping tracks and I had to listen to some tracks three times before I thought they were decent. My favorites are You Get Yours (which should have been a single), Mixed Up World, the Walls Keep Saying Your Name, and I Won't Change You. Other than that her sophmore effort was medicore.
Ellis-Bextor Strikes Gold Here
2006-08-31 - I just recently purchased this along with her 2001 debut "Read My Lips". Her debut was a slick, if slightly tame in spots, euro-disco trip. The eccentricity was there, but only peppered through her debut, here Sophie played up the eclecticism.
This is probably one of the best pop records I've heard in sometime. It is a clean & strong record, no filler, just great songs. Clocking in at almost 40 minutes, "Shoot From the Hip" is a mixed bag of pop all grounded in her familiar sensual euro-disco sound, but isn't fixed there.
"Mixed Up World" opens up in a manic pop whirl, recalling the great styles of late 1980's electric dance music & early 1990's house respectively. It reminds me of vintage Cathy Dennis in some cases. Lyrically, this is one of the strongest songs, one that deals with perserverance & determination of the human spirit. Other highlights include the hopelessly romantic thump of "I Won't Change You", the rock inflected "You Get Yours", & robo-funk of "Another Day" come to mind.
There are two songs I will focus on in particular: the one-two ballad closers "I Am Not Good At Not Getting What I Want" & "Hello, Hello". Both find Ellis-Bextor utilizing her beautiful accented voice to it's emotive fullest, without sacrificing her icy demeanor. From an arrangement point of view "I Am Not..." recalls classic torch, & "Hello, Hello" sits pretty in an alternative setting that would do Tori Amos justice.
Ellis-Bextor is clearly someone who is slightly underrated. Not only does she write her own material, she possesses a very alluring stylist voice, & manages to surround herself with production talent who can bring out the best in her, without sacrificing her personae in the process.
I highly hope that Ellis-Bextor records a follow-up worthy to this masterpiece. I recommend this to anyone who likes good music, take a chance, I'm glad I did! Highly recommended!
Sophie Is GREAT!
2006-02-12 - I was turned on to Sophie from fellow Corrs fans. I'm in Houston Texas, and believe me, there aren't many others around here who would possibly know who she is, or how great her music is! I love all of Read My Lips, and have even purchased "Watch My Lips". I had to have the video to go with so many songs I love. I also bought "Shoot From The Hip", but didn't get into that until recently. I am starting to love that album just as much as her first. I really get into "I Won't Change You" and "You Get Yours". Her voice! I just LOVE Sophie's voice!!
Outstanding!!!!
2006-01-23 - I bought this album just a few days ago and i dont know what took me so long to get into S.E.B. I loved "murder" but didnt buy the album. I logged onto her website and watched the video for "mixed up world" and was hooked. That has to be one of, if not the best songs of the new decade. The entire album is awesome. Pure disco/pop the entire way through. I have heard this album didnt do well in England which is very surprising. I am also surprised that she does not have a record deal in the States. I think she would go over huge here. She is extremely talented and writes all of her own songs. Her music style reminds me quite a bit of kylie minogue as it is pure pop all the way through. She is coming out with a new album soon and i cant wait for it. Good going Sophie!!!! You have a new fan in the States.
Good product
2005-09-02 - The CD came as promised-brand new and factory sealed. Works perfectly. Smooth transaction.
