Editorial Review:
Bring home the UNRATED DVD that lets you go all the way on the first date! With outrageous extras and footage not shown in theaters, here's the ruder, cruder version of the no-holds-barred comedy from two of the twisted minds behind Scary Movie.
Julia Jones (Alyson Hannigan from the American Pie series) is looking for love in ALL the wrong movies, until she snags the man of her dreams! But now, a devious ex, a farting feline and eccentric in-laws threaten her perfect Hollywood wedding!
Description of Date Movie (Unrated Edition):
Sophomoric is too weak a word by at least half to describe the utter silliness Date Movie revels in at every turn. But that's exactly the point of this effort in lowbrow slapstick that proudly proclaims it was created by two of the six writers of the Scary Movie franchise. Adhering to the same spoof formula of those movie romps, Date Movie lampoons countless other current movie characters and plot themes, plus a few that might be a little old for the core audience of youngsters to remember. Date Movie isn't quite as successful in keeping the gags at the same pace they came in the Scary Movies, but it will certainly satisfy those with a taste for tasteless humor. The wisp of a story involves fat girl Julia Jones, played by Alyson Hannigan, who quickly becomes as thin and pretty as she was in the American Pie movies and on TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You'll lose count how many movie references writer/directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer throw in her path as she searches for true love in a world gone mad. Hitch, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Meet the Fockers, King Kong, Lord of the Rings, When Harry Met Sally, Pretty Woman, Bridget Jones' Diary, and Kill Bill, are just a few of the movies that get unkindly homage. There's also plenty of flatulence, mild sexual ribaldry, and the kind of bad taste humor that will utterly delight the pubescent and teenage audience this movie was made for. --Ted Fry
Date Movie (Unrated Edition) Reviews:
NOT AS BAD AS I FEARED, BUT STILL... 4.5 OUT OF 10
2009-08-12 - I was still willing to give this film a chance, even after seeing the abomination called Disaster Movie (Unrated Widescreen), from the talentless hacks Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (They need to be banned from making films). While Date Movie seems like a masterpiece compared to the horrendous Disaster Movie, it still sucked. This film was nothing more than a boring romantic comedy, with several spoofs of better films thrown in. You have much better comedy options to choose than this.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: A girl named Julia Jones is an ugly fat chick no one wants, who is seeking love in all the wrong areas, until she gets liposuction from a guy who is supposed to be spoofing Will Smith's character from Hitch (Widescreen Edition) and a crew of people supposed to be spoofing the show Pimp My Ride. She then competes in a show that makes fun of Who Wants To Marry A Millionaire? and wins the love of the handsome British man she falls in love with. But when her fiancee's ex shows up and threatens to destroy the wedding, Julia must stop this ex from ruining the plans.
MUSIC: The music does fit the romantic comedy theme, and it is pretty good. They even threw in some songs from other romantic comedies. However, in this day and age, the Milkshake song has gotten old and tiresome.
ACTING: Most of these actors aren't necessarily bad, but they get dragged down by too many bad jokes and spoofs. The dialogue can also get on your nerves with too much annoying sexual humor and racial slurs.
ACTION: Most of the spoofs are boring or just plain awful. The spoofs get boring because they overkill the jokes, and ruin them. The bad spoofs include the spoof of Kill Bill and wasted every opportunity to make a fun spoof out of that. There are also spoofs of Napoleon Dynamite as well as a few others, but I won't get into that because this film rips far too many films to want to list.
OVERALL: You and your date are better off watching an actual good romantic comedy instead. This film isn't worth your time or money especially when you look at review score averages (6% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes). This film isn't torturous like Disaster Movie, it's just boring and uninspired.
THE GOOD: Some funny spoofs, good music, and decent actors.
THE BAD: Too many awful or boring spoofs, no original ideas of its own, and bad dialogue.
fck the haters
2009-05-15 - great cast and excellant acting a very funny movie one for the hall of fame
Date Movie
2009-02-04 - >Very funny! Made in awfully poor taste, just what I like. It absolutely spoofs other movies and television shows to death, leaving one to wonder where can it all end; what with so much ridiculous imitating of other productions going on, it barely has time to follow it's own storyline or plot. Some scenes are just plain gross, in the direct-in your face style that shocks and violates all of your six senses-which more often than not-repels, rather than sets one's affections for the eventual wedding couple;
(let alone any other members of the cast)...However, it is hilarious and over the top, with nonstop ludicrous scene after scene-complete with a happy ending for the two young lovers that none of us would really want to know or meet up with anywhere. If I did I would RUN!-Kevin Griffin...
