Goodbye [US CD] Reviews:
Sugar and Spice
2007-10-21 - Yet another great single from The Spice Girls. They had a string of hits from 1997 to 2000.Its amazing how many hits they had in such a short period of time. This is another i often listen to.They weren't around for very long, but they did produce some classic songs.
Goodbye Ginger Spice!
2006-11-16 - This is actually one of my top Spice Girls songs. It is so touching and beautiful. Bravo ladies you did great even without Geri. The video is also amazing and you can see Victoria(Posh) and Melanie B.(Scary) are pregnant. This single is much better than Geri's single Look At Me.
The Spicey's last mixture of greatness
2004-03-11 - Released in late 1998 following the departure of Honey Mustard, I mean Ginger, the Spiceys became a quartet consisting of Coriander, Marjoram, Cinnamon, and Cayenne... I mean Scary, Sporty, Baby, and Posh. They managed to release a string-laden ballad in the interim, "Goodbye," which wasn't a song thumbing their collective noses at their departed comrade, otherwise it would've been "Goodbye, Good Riddance, Ginger-Smeg," but no, it's about the inevitable leaving of the nest of a child grown up, with kindly parental advice and assurance. The style recalls "2 Become 1" with the lush strings, and stands as one of their more notable songs. This song was also included on what looks their swansong, Forever, which is the musical equivalent of putting a rose in a field of daisies.
The upbeat "Christmas Wrapping," complete with the usual Stannard/Rowe pop, also has prominent guitars and brass section (trumpet, trombone, sax) horns making a funky beat. The song actually has the main reasons for singing "Merry X-mas, Merry X-mas, but I think I'll miss this one this year," simply wanting to stay at home and relax on one's own after a busy schedule of touring and obligations.
The next two songs were taken from their Live At Wembley tour and are cover songs, which given their Girl Power schtick, I expected them to cover. They do a satisfactory job of doing Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin's "Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves." Now there's a song whose performance may be simply done for promoting their agenda, but may have a hidden agenda in telling Geri they don't need her. If so, that's mean, as Geri was the most spirited of the bunch. The guitars are quite fierce though, and both Mels have dominant vocal chores here.
How many groups have covered Sister Sledge's "We Are Family"? The Spiceys join the ranks of Ebony Vibe Everlasting and Babes In Toyland in doing this solidarity of sorority song. Again, "I got all my sisters with me" might imply that those sisters don't include a certain ginger-haired one who left.
This EP is their last stab at greatness, but with the full-length followup to Spiceworld, the full implications of ginger taken out of the allspice mixture would be sadly realized.
Saying Goodbyes To The Spice...
2002-08-02 - While the Girls may have released an album since this single release, this was what signaled the end of them as a relevant pop act, in the United States at least. A ballad, the vocal is well done, the lyrics both sad and uplifting. Being as the track was released around a holiday season, the b-side is a cover of the Waitresses' beloved Christmas chestnut "Christmas Wrapping". Live cover versions of girl power classics "Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves" and "We Are Family" fail to excite, they aren't bad, but I would have rather had another b-side or two in favor of these. A good farewell to the charts, as it appears.
Goodbye was so cool!
1999-09-29 - I am so glad they at least made one more cd! goodbye was so awesome-thats the only good song, but christmas wrapping was pretty good too!!!
