Editorial Review:
Putting aside the Girl Power phenomenon--really, what were the chances five scantily-clad birds flashing their knickers with kung-fu kicks wouldn't make it in the music industry?--the Spice Girls really do mean something: great singles. There's not a dog in their whole back-catalogue. They kicked off their career with "Wannabe", "Say You'll Be There" and "2 Become 1"--that's the pop equivalent of an Olympic gold in the triathlon. They're all here on Spice, along with the live favourite "If You Can't Dance"--one that Geri always looked particularly picked-upon whilst singing--and that irresistible champagne effervescence of pop history in the making. The only mistake they made at this point in their career was not releasing the slinky R&B track "Naked" as a single; and if that's because the video plot automatically suggests itself as too obvious, it's not as if that curtailed any other facet of their career. --Caitlin Moran

Spice Reviews:
Good cd. 2 Star Review
2008-08-04 - Bought this for my sister who was really into the Spice Girls at the height of their fame. I've listened to it with her and there are a couple of good songs but I was in my late 20's when this came out so it was a bit past my interest level. Music and vocals are ok. If you are a SG fan, you will like this cd.

Pure fun. 3 Star Review
2008-05-04 - Spice by Spice Girls is a cd I don't have anymore, my taste in music has drastically changed since then but I remember these crazy girls fondly. The Spice Girls couldn't quite carry a tune but the music was fun and carefree, songs I liked: Wannabe, Say'll Be There, 2 Become 1, Who Do You Think You Are?, and Naked. You can say this cd was a guilty pleasure but heck this debut album from the euro pop girls was a lot better than their second album.

A great collection of songs designed to put a smile on your face... 4 Star Review
2008-04-14 - Okay, I may be setting myself up for a lot of laughs here but I really like the Spice Girls. Okay, so maybe I shouldn't say `really like' but they were big when I was like twelve and me and my friends listened to them all of the time, so whenever I hear songs like `Wannabe' I get, oh what's the word; happy. There may not be much depth to be found in most of what the Spice Girls have ever released, but their music is fun and sometimes that is more than enough. With their debut album `Spice', the Spice Girls have strung together a nice collection of fun songs that are hard to dislike.

`Wannabe' is just one of those great anthems. I don't care what you haters want to say, I don't see how you can't like this song. `Say You'll Be There' is another one that was perfect for the radio; spunky and fresh. It's not as good as `Wannabe'; in fact none of the songs on this album are as good as their first single, but they are still fun. `Love Thing' is even better than `Say You'll Be There' and `Who Do You Think You Are' feels like a fiesta; it just makes you want to dance. `Something Kinda Funny' is that same ol' same funky vibe and `If You Can't Dance' reaches `Who Do You Think You Are' territory. These are undoubtedly numb songs but they deliver upbeat and energetic music that easily gets into your skin and releases those fabulous things we call endorphins. Who can be in a bad mood when listening to this stuff?

The you have `2 Become 1', one of those silky smooth tracks that gets that mood set perfectly. These girls have great voices and really compliment one another. They aren't just one big gimmick, even if that's how they are remembered for the most part. Just listen to `Naked'; it's slinky and seductive and unlike anything else on the album. `Last Time Lover' nails the vibe that Spice Girls so effortlessly fell into. Is it just me or do the verse-line vocals sound like something off TLC's `Crazy Sexy Cool'? I might be crazy, but I don't think that I am.

The one track I am not entirely sold on, and the one I skip more often than not, is `Mamma'. It just doesn't fit that well with the rest of the album. It's trying to be deep and meaningful but it's not that facet that bothers me as much as the change up in musical chemistry. It just doesn't sound like a Spice Girl song.

Anyways, I'll close by saying that this is not the greatest album out there but it is such a fun collection of songs I can't help but find enjoyment here. I know a lot of people write the Spice Girls off as gimmicky and washed up but songs like `Wannabe' will be around for a long time to come and never get old. Geri, Emma, Mel B, Mel C and Victoria cemented themselves as pop icons and will go down as one of the most recognizable pop acts of the 90's. No matter what you think of this brand of music you must admit that the Spice Girls mastered it.

Girllll Powerrrr!!!! 4 Star Review
2007-10-27 - So they're a little cheesy. I'll say the same thing I said about Milli Vanilli. Who Cares? They may have little or no singing talent, but the songs (especially "Say You'll Be There") are catchy as hell, and at least they came around before Britney Spears, who is so much more responsible for ruining teen pop music than they could ever be. That dreamy sex ballad "Naked" is pretty cool, too.

1996's Guilty Pleasure 4 Star Review
2007-07-26 - You gotta admit it. "Wannabe" is one of the all time catchiest pop jingles. Is it in your head right now? "Say you'll be there" is also very good. The remainder of teh album, while nowhere near so catchy, isn't bad. It's perfectly respectable chick pop. Gotta own it as a piece of 90s "culture."
