Editorial Review:
The long awaited return of SPINAL TAP! Behind the scenes we take a look at in the 'where are they now' file. The philosophical Nigel Tufnel, the spiritual David St. Hubbins, and the lukewarm Derek Smalls, bring us up to date with their new directions, a
Description of The Return of Spinal Tap:
The Return of Spinal Tap is based around Tap's performance at the Royal Albert Hall in 1992. In between the footage of Messrs. St. Hubbins, Tufnel, and Smalls performing in front of a huge crowd enthusiastically determined to go along with the joke, there are clips purporting to investigate the band's humble origins in the East London suburb of Squatney, and updates from "rockumentary" director Marty DiBergi and hapless record plugger Artie Fufkin from the original movie. It is the latter component that is the real strength of Return. Though the concert footage faithfully rehashes many of the film's most treasured jokes (the malfunctioning props, the dancing midgets), the real satirical strength of This Is Spinal Tap was never its treatment of heavy metal music (which, after all, is hardly a difficult target). What the first movie did best was illuminate the egomania, paranoia, delusion, and stupidity that are the cornerstones of rock & roll as it is lived. The Return of Spinal Tap is a worthy companion piece. --Andrew Mueller
The Return of Spinal Tap Reviews:
poor quality
2009-10-29 - this is a poor excuse of a dvd. this is in mono. poor production value. if you have all the spinal tap cds this is one for your library. to really see the talent of spinal tap i suggest you buy unwigged and unplugged. that is an excellent dvd.
Bad bootleg copy
2009-08-06 - First of all, this is NOT an official release. As another reviewer stated, it is a bootleg pirated DVD made by somebody on a home computer.
How to start. Linear notes are incorrect, on screen menus are garbage, sound is mono, images are washed out (looks like 2-3 generation VHS dub).
Do not buy until an official release is made, I don't understand why Amazon allows this to happen, it is obviously an illegal pirate copy, but they do not seem to care.
good service
2009-06-21 - received the movie quickly, was a gift for my boyfriend and he's happy with it.
The Majesty of Rock!
2009-03-05 - Despite the sometimes-spotty sound mix (thus only four stars), this is, of course, essential for the Spinal Tap completist. I saw a show on this tour; it was a glorious rock moment, and this is a fine memento.
Uneven and lacks coherence.
2008-04-23 - Basically a filmed concert. Interrupted by a few sketches. The whole idea of Spinal Tap is to paraphrase the rock-industry. Gently dressed as irony and general retardedness. The film was good. The lyrics are still very good (don't we just love sublime rock poetry?) but we have seen it before and better. The sketches are still quite good but to have the songs performed, in all seriousness, somehow detracts the whole concept. I'm already a fan but this one won't win any new converts. Although I did get a good laugh at the "right reason" for having a reunion concert.
