Editorial Review:
Static-X and their 1999 debut, Wisconsin Death Trip, seemed to garner more interest for singer Wayne Static's gravity-defying hairstyle than for the L.A.-based lineup's genre-defying music. The aptly titled sophomore outing, Machine, is the worthy, if expected, follow-up. The intense, mechanized, futuristic metal found here comes across as a thrash version of Orgy, with a dollop of Ministry and a dash of Powerman 500 tossed in for extra punch. The intense, short bursts that are "Get to the Gone" and "This Is Not" are forceful and demanding, thanks to Static's growl-scream and the rhythmic power of the music. The spooky "Cold" and epic album closer, "A Dios Alma Perdida," would be suitable for a horror-movie soundtrack, while "Otsego Undead" kicks off with a welcome organic drum sound, though the song never really goes anywhere--a problem that resurfaces throughout Machine. Indeed, the album's revved-up vibe, monster riffs, and irresistible energy are all ultimately held down by a dearth of memorable songs. --Katherine Turman
Machine Reviews:
It's like a Supersonic Industrial-Metal Bullet Train Ride to Hell!
2009-11-18 - Now, I do not usually care much for the types of bands where the lead singer screams and growls the vocals like a crazy raving lunatic on the loose, but, for some odd reason, I love Static-X! I can't explain why I do exactly, but, I do. And this 2nd effort from them is another winner, in my book. I used to listen to this album quite a bit on my headphones while at work. It is just the sort of thing you need if you want to stay pumped while doing menial tasks throughout the long workday. I personally think that this collection of songs is every bit as good as their first album, Wisconsin Death Trip. It has all the things that made that first album so great, a plethora of intense bursts of guitar riffs, blitzkrieg beats, and cool electronic sound effects thrown in here and there. If you are into this sort of music, I think you will enjoy it as well.
Standout tracks are, Get To The Gone, Permanence, Black and White, This is Not, Cold, Structural Defect, S*#% in a Bag, and Machine.
A Solid Album From Static-X
2008-08-21 - This album isn't as great as WDT IMO, but this still has some of their heaviest songs they've ever made, (Get To The Gone and Structural Defect.) And they even have a more gothic song on this album (Cold) And just some catchy tunes (Burn to Burn, Permanence, This Is Not, and Black and White) But something about this album is missing, I can't quite describe it, maybe it's too "Mechanical" But I just don't like this one as much as WDT, but again, if you enjoyed WDT, give this one a fair shot. I think what this album was lacking so much that I liked about WDT, was the crazy wild vocals Wayne Static did in it. But I still enjoyed listening to this album. 4/5 stars.
My Introduction Into Metal
2008-08-01 - Machine was my first true Metal CD. All my friends were into Metal at the time, so I had to pick up something with screaming in it. I eventually picked out Static-X due to them being labeled under the Hard Rock category. I had no previous knowledge of who they were at all. Luckily, this CD turned out to be a very solid purchase.
The music on here is full of variety. Most metal bands stick with one style of music and bore your ears as you listen to them. "Cold" is a very slow paced song with minimal screaming. "Machine" is a very fast paced electronic sounding song. The opening on this CD features circus music followed by pure fast pasted metal music. There is something for any Metal fan on here.
At the end of the day, you still need to enjoy Metal music if you expect to enjoy this CD. Anyone else should just shy away from this. The variety kicks this CD up to four stars.
STATIC-X ROCKS!
2008-02-13 - Static-X Machine Issue 1 with Bonus CD STATIC-X ROCKS HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CDS AND ANYTHING BY STATIC-X!
Sophomore slump, but not a bad record.
2007-05-14 - After WI Death Trip, they were primed for a let-down, because that was such a great record. And this is a let-down, to a certain extent, because it doesn't pack the emotional wallop that WDT did. This is their worst record, but still better than most of the junk out there nowadays. Check out their new one, Cannibal.
