Description of Evan Almighty (Full Screen Edition):

Steve Carell rides the wave of 40-Year-Old Virgin stardom (and a biblical flood) in this bizarre, effects-heavy comedy about a modern-day Noah's ark. The film is nominally a sequel to Bruce Almighty, although it bears little relation to the 2003 Jim Carrey hit--except for the divine intervention of Morgan Freeman, who returns in his role as God. Even Carell's character is much altered from his supporting part in the first film; here, Evan Baxter says goodbye to the news-anchoring business in favor of his job as a naive freshman congressman. When God orders him to build an ark and prepare for an impending inundation, Evan sheepishly takes on the task (it's hard to turn down the job when your hair and beard grow to Old Testament lengths and God wants you to walk around in sackcloth).

Carell gets to do silly dances and mix it up with a variety of animals (real and computer-generated), all of which reminds us of the film's family-friendly tone and the PG rating. The kid stuff works just fine, although the religio-environmental message-mongering makes this a most curious kind of Hollywood blockbuster. When the flood comes, the film shifts into a mammoth-sized CGI extravaganza, recalling the era of overstuffed techno-comedies such as 1941 and Howard the Duck (and not to be nit-picky, but the tsunami-like disaster that overtakes Washington, D.C., looks as though it would snuff out the lives of quite a few citizens). Capable comic support comes from John Michael Higgins, Wanda Sykes, and Jonah Hill, with John Goodman and Lauren Graham filling out stock roles of fatcat politico and loyal wife, respectively. Carell is even better at being sincere than being funny, a talent that comes in handy here and bodes well for his future versatility. --Robert Horton

Evan Almighty (Full Screen Edition) Reviews:
It only takes one Act of Random Kindness. 2 Star Review
2008-05-31 - I'm not one for blasphemy, but if someone is going to play the creator of the heavens and earth Morgan Freeman is the best choice. In the sequel to the 2003 hit Bruce Almighty we are reunited with local newsman Evan Baxter (Steve Carell) in his new role as congressman. In his political campaign he promises to change the world and the rest of the movie is set in motion. Starting with the strange appearance of the number 614. Of course this is to reference the Book of Genesis 6:14 in which God instructs Noah to make an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall cover it inside and out with pitch.

Of course, Morgan Freeman must reveal himself several times before ole Evan gets the message. This in turn leads his family and friends to believe he his going through a mid-life crisis ... especially so when his appearance is altered to reflect his calling. All the while, the true nature of the flood is beginning to reveal itself. Congressman Long (John Goodman) intends to use Evan to secure a dubious land bill which would strip away the national parks. Evan later discovers that Congressman Long has already played this hand in developing the land in which Evan currently resides.

Evan Al mighty can't quite live up to its predecessor, but what sequel can? Steve Carell does an adequate job playing the role as "Noah" Morgan Freeman is, of course, brilliant in his role. Wanda Sykes plays her role well enough ... it can't be easy following Jim Carrey in the comedy department, can it? We get Lauren Graham playing the role of Joan Baxter. A few less noteworthy performances by others. All of which produce a not so bad rendition of the 6th book in Genesis. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, but I like the family humor so often missed in modern films.

    God Awful! 1 Star Review
2008-05-31 - If I was God, I would strike with lightning everyone involved in this stupid thing.

I was trapped on a flight to Hong Kong and it was watching this or License to Wed (what were they thinking!!!) or Knocked Up (What were they snorting!!!)
I know the writers of this pile of excretement had had hits in the past so I guess they thought any grocery list they'd write would be good enough for the Nobel prize.

So many holes, where to start! Why did Evan have to have a beard and wear ancient Biblical clothing? Did time stop at 0 BC? Why did they show Evan falling off piles of lumber and hitting his thumb with a hammer, not once when it wasn't remotely funny, but over and over and over and over.....! I knew then this movie was in trouble. Big trouble.

This was such a wretched movie, I just got out of my seat and looked out the plane's door window and found that staring at miles of nothing but open sea was much more entertaining. And I wondered where had all the REAL talent gone? I found myself thinking, if those responsible for this crap were on the plane, I'd throw them off. Sorry, God.

I forced myself to watch the dreadful ending on cable tv. Yeah, why were all these animals (um...some were sets of 2 males, not male/female!)brought in for a short flood? Sick also of John Goodman whose body of work has shrunk down to cliches with the same sour look on his face that he smells himself and it ain't good! Or maybe he smelled the script.

And dear Morgan Freeman! He's such a great actor. Did he need the money this badly? I heard this film was one of the costliest "comedies" in history. I don't think it earned back what it cost to make. Let that be a lesson!

I hereby swear off all Steve Carell movies from here on out.

Evan Almighty, good clean fun 5 Star Review
2008-04-05 - I love this movie. It's very entertaining for the whole family. Doesn't contradict the real story. It's a must see. Very funny.

    Enjoyable 4 Star Review
2008-03-05 - I don't like overly stupid movies, so I was doubtful that I'd like this one. I was pleasantly surprised. I watched it with my kids and actually enjoyed it. The kids (3, 5, 7) loved it! I rented the movie and am now going to buy it.

Better than the critics reviews 5 Star Review
2008-01-18 - I liked Evan Almighty. The movie makes fun of politicians on Capital Hill because of their arrogance. Evan Baxter wins a political campaign for Congress man by promising he will change the world. Evan leaves his job as local community anchorman and travels with his family in a new Hummer to a new home in a upscale neighborhood. Evan tells his family a Hummer is necessary to keep up the appearance of prestige. The family is excited to be in the new home, but their happiness will be short lived as Evan breaks promises to spend time with his boys.

Evan prays for an opportunity to bring his family together and goes to sleep. Junior Congress man, Evan is selected as a sponsor for Congressman Long's environmental appropriation bill and is burden to study a mountain of paperwork.

Congressman Long's history is analogous to the politics of Owen Valley water project for Los Angeles Basin in the 1920s and the Santa Clarita dam break. "Cadillac Deseret" - The St. Francis Dam provided 38,000 acre feet of water for storage to Los Angeles. When the St Francis Dam broke, 500 plus people died. There had been warning signs, such as muddy brown water pouring through the dam, an indication the water was breaking apart the siding; however, these warnings were not heeded. Congressman Long said after the Dam broke, "they told me this could not happen'.

Morgan Freedman plays God an he tells Evan, "I want you to build an ark" and know that "I love you"; Evan learns from God that to change the world, one must start with "random acts of kindness" which God demonstrates by providing water for a stray dog. Evan tries to avoid the directive but rapid hair growth, a parade of animals that follow him to the office, a massive supply of wood, a loan contract to buy the adjoining lots, and a prophetic rob convince Evan to commence his mission. Evan must wear the rob or appear nude; Evan slicks back his hair and weaves his beard putting a suit over the rob and goes to work; however, in session the clothes appear folds and Evan is standing in his robe; a massive number of animals suddenly arrive and Congress is in a uprise. Congress man long tells the session "not to panic, he has seen this act in circus". Evan stands and tells Congress that a "flood" is coming and "God" is the source of his warning. Evan's wife and children leave for her mothers and while in a small cafe, Joan, "when people pray for courage, God doesn't give them courage, he gives them opportunities". Joan realizes that this is an opportunity to bring the family together. The family returns home and help Evan build an ark and with the help of animals the ark is built. The news arrives and ridicules Evan and Long gets a court order to have the ark destroyed, but the rains come and the dam breaks, the community runs for the ark, and the ark saves the community, and lands settles on the front of the national capital. The family is united.
