Description of The 40-Year-Old Virgin (Unrated Widescreen Edition):
Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer

2009-08-05 - Wow- if you only saw this movie on TV what a difference the real deal is! Get ready for some hard language. If you don't mind then you'll really get the jist of this movie. I wouldn't have it any other way- get the movie and get ready for some real laughs!
Apatow's "one"
2009-06-03 - Normally adolescent humor, Apatow comes through with this (thanks to Carell's writing and acting.
I don't normally care for the "Oscars" (or awards shows in general) but I remember in 2005 the intense debate (hype) to figure out what would be the "best film" of 2005. There was Crash, Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Good Night, and Good Luck, and Munich. Personally, I would rather watch Munich again over all those movies. But other notables were Syriana and 40 year old Virgin.
Crash would win "best flim" and Phillip Hoffamn for "best performance". But this movie will be the most remembered and most watched of the entire lot for the decades to come and Carroll's performance should of at least nominated him the for the funky award (ala, Cary Grant).
amusing and easy to watch 
2009-03-21 - My girlfriend called this one and I enjoyed it in spite of lower expectations. A comic take on the social dynamics of sexual attraction, the show picks low hanging fruits and squeezes them into humorade - enjoyable and easy to drink :)
The characters are flat, and there are no surprises before the final credit sequence.. wow! The movie doesn't take itself seriously, so we don't have to - we can laugh at our ridiculous society and how obsessed we are with sex, being sexy, and every perception thereof.
Set in Los Angeles and clearly inspired by San Francisco's 40 Days and 40 Nights, I wish the creators had weaved a strand or two of LA culture (ala L.A. Story (15th Anniversary Edition)) into the film.

2009-03-04 - Andy (Steve Carell) works at an electronic store as a stock boy. Andy also plays video games and collects comics and rare toys. Andy's weekend of fun is buying the ingredients for an egg salad sandwich...and making it. Andy is 40 years old. Andy is also a virgin.
Within the store that Andy works at are a bunch of guys who do what most guys do. Talk crap to one another (in a `friend' way), play poker, go clubbing, lookin for the chickys, and even going to see donkey shows. Well, Andy doesn't really fit in with the rest of the group, but one day the rest of the guys ask Andy to fill in at the poker game because one of the regulars won't be there. During the game the guys start talking about sex and women, and Andy makes the mistake of saying boobs feel like a bag of sand. Thanks to this mistake the guys figure out he's still a virgin. And instead of making his life a living hell, they decide to help him out in the ways they know how.
This movie has made me laugh so many times and in so many spots. Judd Apatow (writer, director, and producer) has the exact same kind of comedy as me. And to me that comedy is just straight stupid and non-caring and perverse and quick witted and spontaneous...and ... and... well... there is just so much more. Thankfully Apatow has made it in the movie business because the networks sure didn't let him succeed on T.V. (Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared). Also I'm happy that Apatow has kept a lot of his actors from his T.V. shows and starred or co-starred them in his movies, Like Seth Rogen for instance. To me, Seth was just not that funny at all in Freaks and Geeks, but now he's one of my favorite actors for a comedy. I've seen The 40-Year Old Virgin around 20 times since it came out in theaters and I still laugh at it in many spots.
The only bad thing I can say about this movie is that it just isn't for everyone. Some people's humor is just so far gone or to snobbish that they'll never like a movie like this. There is a lot of cussing, perverse jokes, and even nudity. And that's ok that it's not for everyone, but for the people that cant stand movies like this... how do you not know what you are getting into before you watch something like this?
In the end, I would say BUY this movie if you love to laugh at some crude humor. Stay away if you don't.
P.S. I would love to be in an Apatow movie.
All sexual innuendo and hijinx aside, Beautiful movie
2009-03-02 - Extremely funny,I have never heard such funny descriptions involving alligator and house. Mooj is funny as F! lol . all the characters are funny. I can watch this movie over and over. I think this is the BEST film Seth Rogen has been in. and one of the best of judd apatow along w/ talladega nights and anchorman all others are just so-so.
