Description of Father of the Bride (15th Anniversary Edition):
This '90s update of the Spencer Tracy-Elizabeth Taylor hit is a mix of the pleasant and the silly, a nice enough movie but a little too controlled to become particularly interesting. Steve Martin plays the aging patriarch who is threatened by his daughter's engagement and not-quite-willing to let her go. The writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers provides Martin's character with a perhaps too-broad range of comic responsiveness to the situation, some of it gentle (a ritual game of basketball between dad and his little girl) and some of it slapstick (Martin sneaking around his prospective in-laws' house and encountering a guard dog). Martin Short turns up as a wedding coordinator--which has deliriously delicious possibilities--but his inventiveness doesn't quite strike the chord this time. --Tom Keogh

a fun movie 
2009-10-12 - this is a fun movie to watch even though I will probably never be able to afford the wedding shown in the movie. A fun Movie, I recommend it.
Two stories, for two different audiences 
2009-09-07 - This is two stories in one. The first is a comedy, featuring the humor of Steve Martin and Martin Short. IT pretty much works for all audiences, I think.
The second story plays to women only, by showing their dream wedding on screen. This works well for the target audience, I'm sure, but does a disservice. Precious daughter, assisted by overly excited and adoring mother, gets Dad to put up a couple hundred thousand dollars for one or two days of celebration. Not the best message to send to the teenage girls watching this movie and dreaming of the same thing when they get engaged.
Cheaper at Target
2009-07-26 - I love this movie. Always have. However, I found this same DVD (15th anniversary) was only $9.00 at my local Target. Seriously, shop around!!!
Franc Funniest at Wedding Parlour
2009-05-29 - Truly the funniest scene is when George & family are reviewing the 'cake book' and the daughter wants a $1200 cake-- to which George (while grimacing) tries to contain his pain but Franc makes fun of George's cheapness by replying, " Well, welcome to the 90's Mr. Banks" but Franc can barely get this sentence out because he is trying to overcome such incredible laughter within himself. I thought for sure they'd say CUT... it was a hilarious scene. When I'm down in the dumps with my mortgage payment...I play it to maintain my sense of humour! P.S. Make no mistake- Franc is (as previously mentioned) over the top but not gay! In no way would I recommend nor would I put up with a movie where gays 'flit' about. This would ruin any movie.
