Editorial Review:
Comic dynamos Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn pair up for the first time in director Frank Oz's romantic comedy of an architect and waitress who spin wild tales about being married to each other, only to discover that their stories arent entirely false. When Davis (Martin) tries to eject unwanted housesitter Gwen (Hawn) from his lovely but unoccupied house, he discovers that Gwens romantic lies to the locals about their whirlwind courtship and wedding have captured the townsfolks hearts and made jealous the woman who turned down Davis's marriage proposal months before. Seeing the opportunity to win back his sweetheart, Becky, Davis agrees to let Gwen stay in the house while they pretend to be married. As Gwens clever stories bring Becky and a deserved promotion within reach, Davis must figure out how much of his sham marriage is truly a sham. Hilarious when on their own, Hawn and Martin ratchet comedy up to a whole new level when they team up in one of the most outrageous and backward courtships ever.
Description of Housesitter:
The teaming of Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn would seem to have been sure-fire casting, but Housesitter's writing is never strong enough to sustain it and the film's hit-and-miss quality has more misses than hits. Martin plays an architect who builds his dream house for his high school sweetheart (Dana Delany), then surprises her with a marriage proposal--both of which she rejects. Distraught, he goes back to New York and pours out his heart to a woman he meets in a bar and beds (Hawn), not realizing she is a flaky con artist. She knows a good thing when she hears it and heads for his hometown, moves into the empty dream house, and begins passing herself off as Martin's new wife. Though the writers build in a variety of complications (involving Delany, as well as Martin's parents and boss), the film finds its jokes only in fits and starts, though Martin has a particularly hilarious moment when he must sing to his father in front of a crowd of strangers. --Marshall Fine

Steve and Goldie in good form! It's hard to imagine anyone regretting owning this on DVD.
Goldie as delightful as ever
2009-08-12 - It is nice to watch these brilliant actors having fun in front of the camera in pleasant surroundings, supported by a good team of performers. Goldie Hawn is funny and her smile priceless. Although a fine comedienne, Goldie draws heavily on her spectacular legs and posterior in this movie. Fully aware of her features, she doesn't hesitate making the most of them. However, the story is, as usual in this kind of movies, rather impossible and quite unbelievable, so the content of Goldie's wranglers not only support her, but the whole movie as well. Watching it is one way getting in good mood without overloading the brain activity.
A lovely, feel good movie
2009-04-12 - This is such a charming movie. Goldie Hawn the scammer and straight laced Steve Martin make an enjoyable on-screen couple. I have seen this movie dozens of times and I have not tired of the storyline or the scenery. Pop the popcorn and settle in! This light, fun film will not disappoint.
Love this duo
2009-04-10 - Can you go wrong with this team? Davis (Martin) builds a house for his dream girl only to be turned down. In the mean time Gwen (Hawn) is a drifter girl waitressing where she meets Martin and they end up spending the night together where he tells her about the house only to be gone before morning.
She finds the picture and knowing Davis never foes there decides to pay it a visit where she passes herself off as his wife ONLY to add to the mess runs into Davis' parents. Davis finds out and well lets just say the lies and plots just get nuttier by the minute. A must see too hard o give total description and not make this review a book.
lets just say if your a fan of Either of these actors you WON'T be disappointed.
Fun & Funny
2009-03-26 - This is a really cute and romantic movie! It's almost like good, fun marriage counseling, if there is such a thing! Great date-movie.
