Editorial Review:
In this solid suspense drama, Frank Sinatra stars as detective Tony Rome who, while working on a case, discovers everybody he talks to winds up dead.
Description of Lady in Cement:
When it was released in 1968, Lady in Cement was the perfect movie for "The Man Who Reads Playboy." It was tailor-made for middle-aged martini-and-poker men who enjoyed Frank Sinatra in Tony Rome a year earlier, and this slapdash sequel finds Ol' Blue Eyes in sun-soaked Miami, where his treasure-hunting discovery of a naked blonde (the ill-fated lady in cement, found dead underwater) gets him tangled up with a massive thug (Dan Blocker), a retired Mafioso (Martin Gabel) with an over-ambitious son, an ultra-sexy heiress (Raquel Welch, in her sexpot prime at age 27), and a variety of Floridian lowlifes who lent the film its R-rated appeal for the cocktail crowd. With its disposable mystery, rampant homophobia, go-go club lechery, peekaboo nudity, bursts of red-blooded violence, and swinging score by Hugo Montenegro, this not-so-lucky Lady bombed at the box office and tested Sinatra's legendary temper, but it's still raucously entertaining (it partially inspired the Austin Powers comedies), and there are plenty of in-jokes to be seen (and especially heard) for anyone steeped in '60s pop culture. Nestled between The Graduate and Easy Rider, Lady in Cement was a cinematic fossil even before the cameras rolled, but Frank's fans are sure to love it anyway. --Jeff Shannon
Lady in Cement Reviews:
NO CLOSED CAPTIONS
2009-11-05 - ALTHOUGH THE JACKET INDICATED THIS FILM IS PRODUCED WITH CLOSED CAPTIONS, THERE WERE NONE. wE MISSED A LOT OF THE SPOKEN WORDS
Great Movie
2009-07-11 - Frank Sinatra was not only a great singer he was also a very good actor because he made is look so easy and Raquel Welch was beautiful.
Fun Sequel to, "Tony Rome"
2009-04-04 - If you're a fan of Frank Sinatra as an actor, and if you found, "Tony Rome" to be a good classic private eye tale, you will thoroughly enjoy, "Lady in Cement." Ol' Blue Eyes is on a new case as Tony, a former Miami detective scraping a living as a private detective who can't afford to be too selective when it comes to clientele. Of course, this gets him mixed up in some complicated situations with shady characters, lovely mystery - women, and deadly mobsters. The script bounces along nicely with crisp dialogue and sharp acting throughout, and Frank is at his best delivering witty one - liners with a world weary cynicism. Sinatra's middle years produced some of his finest acting, and he breezes through this film as if he were made for the role. A supporting cast including Raquel Welch, Dan Blocker and Richard Conte nicely compliments Sinatra's boozing, gambling, but always reliable Tony. This is a necessary addition to any private eye DVD collection.
lady in cement
2009-01-14 - Loved "Lady in Cement" and "Tony Rome",its a shame F.S. didn't do more of them.
Highly recommend these movies if you like 60's--70's gumshoe stuff with a sense
of humor.
One word, Sinatra
2008-09-02 - A very good movie. People of all generations would like it. It has an adult theme to it. There was only one other movie he made as this character. Such a shame it would have made a great detective series. Frank Sinatra was a great actor, and this movie shows his skill. And a good cameo role by the very gorgeous Racquel Welch is a double bonus.
