Description of A Time to Love:
Stevie Wonder took more than ten years to give a studio successor to Conversation Peace but A Time to Love feels fresher than we had any right to expect after such a long wait. For starters, the guests are well picked: They include Bonnie Raitt (playing slide guitar on "Tell Your Heart I Love You"), gospel singer Kim Burrell (on "If Your Heart Cannot Be Moved"), India Arie (on the title track), and Wonder's own daughter, Aisha Morris (whom listeners may remember as the source of her dad's delight in Songs in the Key of Life--"Isn't She Lovely"). Last but not least, Prince plays elegant, minimal funky guitar and En Vogue perform swoony backup vocals on first single "So What the Fuss," a classic pared-down dance number graced with Wonder's trademark socially conscious lyrics. It's on tracks like these--sounding as if they could be from anytime between 1975 and now--that Wonder shows he's still got the golden touch. He remains a sterling melodicist ("Moon Blue" is a killer ballad), and the harmonica intro on "From the Bottom of My Heart" is among the loveliest he's created. Of course a Wonder album wouldn't be complete without saccharine ballads, and he delivers there too ("Passionate Raindrops," "Can't Imagine Love Without You"). Still, this is a solid effort from one of America's premier artists. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
A Time to Love Reviews:
Awesome!
2009-07-14 - Totally Stevie! Each track better than the last, and nothing sub par. Buy with the confidence that you're spending your hard earned money well!
HAS THERE EVER BEEN A STEVIE WONDER ALBUM SINCE 1972 WHERE HE DID NOT DELIVER?
2009-02-17 - O.K. maybe 1 (One), but we ain't gonna count "The Secret Life Of Plants". Although this was put on hold which seemed like forever (I think most of us just simply got tired of waiting). This IS the Stevie Wonder we've been waiting for! From Track 1 to the very last. Now there's a bonus disc with a handful of his #1 Hits...WHY??? But at least it's on a disc all by itself, which is good thing. Because it's been out sooooooooo long you can buy this as little as $1.50, so there's NO REASON not to buy it!!!
Mosaic of background harmonies
2008-04-23 - I really liked the mosaic of background harmonies in the song "My love is on fire". On my first listening of this cd , that is what caught my ear. I like the way the vocals are arranged and there is a specific chord that the singers hit that is great . Just when I thought that there wasn't any more room for background vocals, some "ya ya ya"'s appear periodically. That's what I liked the most! I'm a singer/songriter and I produce my own recordings so I find this kind of production work exciting. Thanks Stevie Wonder and company.
A Time to Love
2007-10-05 - It took Wonder 10 years to release this album. Most bands live and die in that time period. And he was working pretty hard on this one, too. "If Your Love Cannot Be Moved" favorably recalls "Pastime Paradise"; "Sweetest Somebody I Know" is one of his typically brilliant love songs; "Moon Blue" is a dead-on slow jam, as is "My Love is on Fire"; "Please Don't Hurt My Baby" is funky as hell, even if I don't like the last minute of it; "Tell Your Heart I Love You" is fun and nothing else. But I'm gonna be a big jerk here and dish out some criticism. Most notably, there's too much music here. 1:17:48 is barely regulation CD length, and several cuts should've been, um... cut. "From the Bottom of My Heart" is annoyingly perky; "How Will I Know" features his only modestly talented daughter; "True Love" is sappy; "Shelter in the Rain" is overdone. But "So What the Fuss" makes up for all that; funky, with a fun Prince guest spot. "Positivity" is great too. Especially the overdubbed vocals. First-rate album.
STEVIE WONDER IS THE MUSICAL GENIUS!
2007-07-15 - I HAVE LOVED STEVIE WONDER EVER SINCE I HEARD "SIR DUKE" AND "RIBBON IN THE SKY" AND "OVERJOYED" ON THE RADIO. I NOW HAVE ALMOST ALL OF HIS ALBUMS AND I STILL LISTEN TO THEM OFTEN. YOU WILL NEVER GET BORED LISTENING TO HIM. HE KNOWS HOW TO MAKE HIS MUSIC INTERESTING. HIS VOICE HAS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS AND I THINK HE WAITED TOO LONG TO MAKE ANOTHER ALBUM. THIS ALBUM DOES HAVE SOME GOOD MUSIC ON IT. I WOULD ALSO SUGGEST GETTING "SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE" THAT WAS A VERY FAMOUS ALBUM. ALSO TRY A LOT OF HIS OTHER ALBUMS. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. HE USUALLY HAS SO MANY HITS ON EACH ALBUM. IT HAS SO MUCH QUALITY. ITS ACTUALLY HARD TO FIND A SONG THAT YOU DON'T LIKE. HE HAS A REALLY NICE VOICE TOO. I SEE HIM ONCE A YEAR AT THE HOUSE OF TOYS EVENT AND HE IS FANTASTIC. HE CAN PLAY THE KEYBOARDS, THE HARMONICA, THE DRUMS, WRITE SONGS, WRITE MUSIC, AND PERFORM IT. HE HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A VERY LONG TIME. HE IS THE GREATEST IN MY OPINION. HE PUTS ME IN A GREAT MOOD ALL THE TIME. HE HAS STOLEN MY HEART WITH HIS MUSIC AND SINGING. HIS VOICE IS SOOTHING AND HE CAN HIT SOME NICE HIGH NOTES. HE SOUNDS GOOD NO MATTER WHAT NOTES HE HITS THOUGH. HE KNOWS HOW TO CHANGE HIS VOICE AND MAKE IT SOUND DIFFERENT IF HE WANTS TO. HE IS A VERY GOOD PERFORMER.
