The Woman in Red Reviews:
Music Lover 5 Star Review
2009-03-12 - This is one of my favorite CDs. Stevie Wonder and Dionne Warwick were
born to sing together. What's so great about this CD is that you can
listen to all the songs without skipping over any song. This is a
welcome addition to my collection.

I Just Called To Say I Love You! 3 Star Review
2007-12-05 - After entering the 80's with Hotter Than July that gave him great success and performing the massive hit "Ebony And Ivory" on with Paul McCartney (for his album Tug Of War that reached #1 on both sides of the Atlantic Stevie Wonder's next move was another soundtrack album (his second after "Secret Life of Plants") but this time around it was to a blockbuster film and all of the songs were radio friendly pop songs, not instrumentals other then "It's More Then You" that wasn't written or performed by him. It was also partly a duet album with Dionne Warwick, where 2 songs were duets and 1 song solely performed by Ms Warwick. All of those 3 songs were rather forgetable ballads though. The rest are Stevie Wonder originals apart from the aformentioned instrumental from Ben Bridges. First out is the title track "Woman in Red" a synth-pop song that basically just deal with the woman in red from the film. But then it comes, "I Just Called To Say I Love You", the one reason to purchase this album I guess. The mammoth hit that was bigger then the film and ironically it became Stevie Wonder's biggest hit of all time reaching #1 in most countries in 1984 and ranked as the #3 biggest hit of the entire decade. This amazing loves song is enough reason to to own the album. The rest of the songs are called "Love Light In Flight" and "Don't Drive Drunk" both minor single hits with pretty good 80's synth pop arrangements. After the amazing work that Stevie did in the 70's where it felt like he was developing his style for each album this can only be seen as a letdown. I haven't seen the film but it was a romantic comedy and it was not such a big success either. It's hard to imagine one of the biggest and most intelligent artist deciding to make a soundtrack to it. About half of the songs are good here but it never feels like one album. If you're interested in this album it's probably cause of "I Just Called", and owning the album where it appears could be fun for Stevie Wonder fans but otherwise just buy a "Greatest Hits Album" like Stevie Wonder - The Definitive Collection and you'll get more for your money.

Stevie Wonder 5 Star Review
2007-10-17 - I am a huge fan of Stevie Wonder.
I've always had his collection in album form

I am completing it in the CD verson.

Thanks.

Not Exactly "Wonder"-ful 3 Star Review
2007-07-26 - This CD is clearly not Stevie Wonder's best effort! I guess he was running out of ideas, or else he just wanted to create an album for the current generation of "Listen-while-you-drive" listeners. "I Just Called to Say I Love You" might just be the most overrated song he has ever written. As far as soundtrack album is concerned, one for the movie "Jungle Fever" is much better.

Mixed bag 4 Star Review
2006-10-11 - Although I've had this album since it came out in 1984 - first on vinyl and more recently on CD - I only got to see the movie it's from a few weeks ago. I'd like to say it was worth the wait but I don't want to lie.

But this is about the soundtrack. It's a mixed bag. Some of the songs are simply stunning, especially ones like "It's You" and "Weakness" where Stevie duets with Dionne Warwick. The chemistry between them works so well, to this day I still wonder why they didn't do more stuff together. Talking about where Stevie flies solo, the title track I simply don't get while on the other hand, "Don't Drive Drunk" sends a very useful message with a manic kind of humour that makes it enjoyable every single time I hear it. "Love Flight In Flight" is classic Stevie and the instrumental track "It's More Than You" is a joy - especially to a jazz head like me. I also wonder why Stevie never did more instrumental or even jazz work. Despite what I remember reading him say in an interview many years ago, it's not like he hasn't got the talent.

Then there's the one track where Dionne flies solo and "Moment's Aren't Moments" is simply musical passion.

Finally there's the dire "I Just Called To Say I Love You" which was (and still is) anathema to many Stevie fans worldwide. The song makes me cringe every time I hear it. Ironic then, that it was one of his biggest selling singles of all time and the only one of his singles to get to number one here in the UK. Go figure.

Like I said, a mixed bag. But no Stevie Wonder fan's collection could be called complete without it. Highly recommended.
