Live at Last: A Wonder Summer's Night Reviews:
Little ain't little anymore
2009-09-27 - Great show! the set was creative, the backup musicians were all first rate. Some of the audience participation songs could have been deleted
Stevie Live....What else is there to be said!!!!
2009-09-23 - I came out of my mother listening to this genius of a man. His work over the last 50 years should speak for itself. I purchased this dvd the day it was released and have watched it countless times since. He covers everything from his early years to his most recent master pieces. I too have been fortunate enough to witness Stevie in concert and although there is nothing like being there live this is the next best thing. A must have for your collection. Show your kids and their kids what real music is all about. We are missing this with what the industry is producing today.
Thank you Stevie for all you have given us. Truly one of a kind!

Expected a lot more
2009-09-19 - There ARE positives to this DVD - Stevie is in good voice, his band is very talented and it's clear they're having a heckuva good time. The problems are the song selection and the pacing. As others have noted, the setlist leans too heavily on slower and unfamiliar (Wonder hasn't had a Top 40 hit since 1987) numbers that get repetitive after a while. When he does pull out the hits, they crackle for the most part (if the opening bass line of "I Wish" doesn't get your toes tapping you might want to check your pulse). "Visions" from "Innervisions" is a nice surprising "deep cut" from his classic era, but where are "That Girl" or "I Was Made To Love Her" or "You Haven't Done Nothin'" (which could have been 'dedicated' to George W. Bush, thus providing a more coherent social statement than the clumsy Al Gore-isms he throws in instead)?
The biggest problem is that there's just far too much wasted time - about five songs into the set the band just sits on a stagnant vamp forever, and then Stevie whips out a talkbox (remember Peter Frampton's "Do You Feel Like We Do"?) for a pointless and torturous 20-minute "medley" of "London Bridge Is Falling Down" and some snippets of Beatles and Rolling Stones hits. Later, one of the "audience participation" bits is an overlong call-and-response intro to "Part Time Lover". Oh, and Wonder plays harmonica a grand total of TWO times.
My recommendation is to Netflix this one and keep your finger near the "Fast Forward" button on your remote.
Crystal Wonder!
2009-09-19 - Special thanks to Sylvia Rhone, Ray Still & the rest of the staff at Universal for once again etching more meaning to the already crystallized legend of Stevie Wonder with the release of "Live At Last: A Wonder Summer's Night." Recorded at the illustrious O2 arena in London, the clarity of this sensational live presentation penetrates and permeates throughout the entire DVD with enhanced Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and remarkable screen quality. Taking us on this exclusive 50-year musical journey, the genius of Stevie Wonder, with the strength of his band directed by bassist Nate Watts mellifluously leads the viewers on a series of highs! There are no low points on this album at all. Every song is the life of the party from beginning to the absolute end. The band and vocalists are phenomenal!! Keith John, Aisha Morris (Stevie's daughter), Dejah Gomez & Kimberly Brewer are having a wonderful time on the stage alongside the incredibly oozing guitar licks of Errol Cooney and Kyle Bolden, who meshed perfectly together on the Unity Melody of the song "Visions"!! Vocally, Stevie is STILL the quintessential vocalist of our generation as well as the epitome of what timeless and tenacious musical craft is all about. I loved everything, including the cover of Miles Davis' "All Blues", the UK Medley where Stevie and his guitarists sing using talk boxes. They masterfully flow right into Thom Bell & Linda Creed's "People Make The World Go 'Round." Stanley Randolph & Fausto Cuevas put it down on drums and percussions! Fabulous! Overall, "Wonder Summer's Night" is so versatile and well-rounded. The quality is remarkable. The concept is refreshing and the album itself immortalizes and secures Stevie's place as a mastermind of epic popular music. GO GET THIS DVD!! You will not be disappointed!
