Editorial Review:
Six hours of monosyllabic John Rambo high jinks, best savored in surround sound (for the bone-rattling explosions) and with your brain on pause (for everything else). Sylvester Stallone's second signature character, after Rocky, a seething ex-Green Beret killing machine, went from Viet-vet victim in the original picture, First Blood, flipping out over the ingratitude of his beloved homeland, to a muscle-bound terminator in Rambo III, mowing down Commies in the deserts of Afghanistan. You should consider bypassing the boxed set in favor of just the middle chapter, Rambo: First Blood Part 2, written by James Cameron and directed by George Pan Cosmotos. It's the most balanced and satisfying of the three films: Rambo is dropped back into 'Nam to rescue some POWs, and the action builds steadily in scale and ferocity. Each fireball seems to be bigger than the last. Of all the recent headbanger action movies, only the first Die Hard offers more bang for the buck. The underrated character actor Richard Crenna (a standout sleazebag in Body Heat), as Rambo's military mentor and staunch defender, is the series' secret weapon, providing some welcome human ballast. --David Chute
Rambo Trilogy (Special Edition DVD Collection) - (First Blood/Rambo: First Blood Part II/Rambo III) Reviews:
To win a war you must become war.
2008-05-04 - I saw Rambo first blood part 2 when I was about 14yrs old. I still remember the cheers in the theater when Rambo was wasting the enemy. This three disk trilogy set is well worth the money. It not only has the first three Rambo films, but has lots of extras both on each movie disk as well as the additional disk with more extras. These movies definitely bring back memories. I hope this review helps.
Lots of Rambo, GREAT Special Features!!
2007-10-04 - What makes me laugh about this is simple, and I've done the same thing before I even saw the movies! If you happen to be sitting around, talking about how you want to see the "Rambo" movies, you might find out in a hurry that the first one isn't simply called, "Rambo." It was and still is a bestseller by David Morrell called, "First Blood." I got the box set a few years ago for Christmas without even seeing one of the movies. Now you can probably be certain that this will be more realistic then your typical "G.I. Joe" episode. So, with another flick coming out sooner or later, supposedly called, "John Rambo," enjoy the box set first. There are three movies in the set, and I'll list them in order.
First Blood: Ok, this is your "Rambo Part I," if you will. This is the introduction to John Rambo, and you don't want to screw with him. I had no clue if this would start right in the middle of 'Nam, or Rambo in Basic Training. But you find Rambo on the streets, and all he wants is to find a place to eat. But the wrong person pisses him off, just ask the Sheriff! He has no idea who he messed with. This is where you get to know Rambo and his Colonel. The classic line is this film has to be, "They drew first blood. Not me!" The special features on this are excellent. You even see some David Morrell talk about how he came about to write "First Blood." Pretty neat!
Rambo: First Blood: Part II: Rambo is called back into action by Col. Trautman! He is on the look out for POWs. He is still the perfect killing machine. He still wants to win. It isn't over for Rambo! Everything is personal. Once again, the special features are great. It comes with the documentary, "We Get to Win This Time." It makes it worth the money.
Rambo III: I'm going to be blunt. If Afghanistan is a sore spot for you, don't watch it. The fact of the matter is, who knew? It's over 20 years later! Get over it already! This is #3 in the box set, and I still enjoyed it. This time Rambo is on a search for Trautman. It gets very interesting. The special features are very interesting.
So when you run into Rambo, you'll certainly run into action packed! You don't buy Rambo expecting "Mrs. Doubtfire." You expect some great stuff. And some great entertainment! Which is what this is. Love it or hate it, Rambo is going to be around for quite some time. It will always be considered a classic by many. If you want lots of Rambo, then this is for you!
These were all great
2007-04-15 - If you like Sylvester Stallone then you should enjoy these action pack movies.
Rambo
2007-01-29 - These 3 movies are Rambo at his best - it's best to watch all 3 consequetively. We like the first and the third the best.
It is like stepping into a nightmare
2007-01-15 - When your only skill is to kill and you have had enough of that, you tend to wander. This is the circumstance in which we find John J. Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) Vietnam vet. Wandering around in his old field jacket he had the misfortune to bump into, of all people the local macho Sheriff Will Teasle (Brian Dennehy.) It is the sheriff's duty to protect the community from people wondering around in his/her field jacket.
Well push comes to shove when the sheriff verdantly or invariantly draws "First Blood". Now nether one can back down and the whole town and surrounding hills becomes a shooting gallery.
There is only one man who may be able to save the situation if anyone is willing to listen, but will they? Yep its is Rambo's old commander Col. Samuel Trautman well played by Richard Crenna.
