Editorial Review:
Thalia Zedek has been a force on the indie music landscape for over twenty years, dating back to her days in Live Skull and Uzi. Along with Chris Brokaw, she fronted the band Come, who released four records on Matador. This is Thalia's second album for Thrill Jockey; a follow-up to 2004's "Trust Not Those In Whom Without Some Touch Of Madness", and the first to feature her new full band. Much like the work of Nick Cave, Thalia's vocals and song arrangements have a pervasive bittersweet tone. She's chosen unusual instrumentation such as viola to compliment her guitar work, and like a great full-bodied burgundy, her songs are rich in texture and reveal with each listen their delicately crafted layers. LP version limited to 1,000 copies. Comes with a coupon for free MP3 download.
Liars and Prayers Reviews:
Better, but not outstanding.
2008-06-29 - Thalia Zedek's previous album, "Trust Not ...", was a stumble after the breath-taking "Been Here And Gone". This new album is a lot better then "Trust Not ..."; it seems that Thalia's learned she has to make songs sound different, and not just 60 minutes of one tone and tempo. So that's an improvement.
But on the flip side, nothing about "Liars" will outright grab you, either. There isn't a "Ex-communications" or "1926", a song that reaches out and just grabs your heart for all its worth. The songs are tight, the band sounds energized, and the lyrics are, as always, stirring and emotional. But there's just nothing that makes this album stand out. It's a lot like the last two albums by Zedek's former band, Come; competent, but you know they're capable of so much more.
As good as ever
2008-05-03 - "Been Here and Gone" is in my top 5 records of all time, and this one is just as good. Moody, beautiful, and elegant. Some of her best work ever. Not much else to say, really.
Master Class
2008-04-27 - A much fuller sounding record than Been Here And Touch Not Those, while it still sounds very different from those sublime Come records. It has her solo thread running through it, a developed sound and musical sensibility that is entirely her own. She sounds like no one else, and no one else sounds like her.
A heavy hitter of an album. It's a shame the press are too preoccupied with dire "factory Indie" to hear a really towering master class in true indie rock.
another standout from Thalia
2008-04-25 - Thalia Zedek is one of the most underrated musicians. She is a true original. This is another great album in a long list of beautiful recordings. I have been a fan for 25 years when she started out playing in backyards in Allston. Come made incredible music, but solo Thalia is the best.
