Editorial Review:
Light R&B hooks, breathy vocals, guest rappers--it sounds like a recipe for the latest effort from J-Lo or Ashanti, but those elements make up the mix on Mexican diva Thalia's self-titled, English-language debut album. It's a slickly produced smorgasbord, but there's little of the personality, energy and growth here that Thalia has exhibited on her last three Spanish-language studio albums. Instead, the singer opts for maximum mainstream appeal which, in this case, includes collaborating with a bevy of hip-pop producers and songwriters, including Rick Wake (Celine Dion, Anastacia), Cory Rooney (J-Lo, Destiny's Child) and Cathy Dennis (Kylie Minogue, Kelly Clarkson). The first single, "I Want You," featuring Fat Joe, breezes in and out of memory almost instantly. The album's six remaining original tunes are equally anonymous. Only the yearning ballad "Closer To You" and a remix of "The Mexican," both repeats from Thalia's 2002 album, generate any real heat. It's not an altogether disastrous effort, but that so much of Thalia's own flavor was lost in the translation is ultimately disappointing. --Joey Guerra
Thalia Reviews:
Why???
2009-10-04 - Thalia has one of the most beautiful voice with a jaw-dropping vocal range that touches you deeply. This album dissapoints immensley. There are only about three good songs but for the most part it sounds too over-produced and Long gone are the soaring vocals with beautiful melodies and lyrics that only Thalia can write so well.
If you really wanna find just how talented this singer is check out "El Sexto Sentido" or "Arrasando" for pure pop perfection.
I love you Thalia so i will forgive you for this mess, because in reality your other work is so powerful and potent that it overshadows this mishap.
if u dont already own, u shouldnt miss out now,...
2008-04-20 - not even bi-lingual, there is no need to be, with this really cool cd. thalia has such a wonderful tempo and upbeat style that her sweet voice just moves u right along into a great frame of mind. even tho it was produced awhile back, i have really enjoyed this cd. amazon used cd sellers made this such a sweet deal.
Love it!
2008-01-28 - Great album. Thalia delivers in English and a few in Espanol. Nice groovey beats with her pretty, sexy voice. Reviews are usually based on expectations and I got what I wanted. Others might have been better served by listening to the snippets available for each song. I only needed to listen to two before I knew I wanted the album. I think people who didn't like the album can be a bit melodramatic. If you don't like this style of music and can't do a little homework before you purchase then it's really on you. Thalia is great in English or Espanol. Can't wait for her next album.
Maybe Next Time Thalia
2007-04-02 - One thing I must say I think that it was great that Thalia would switch over to english. I think my problem with this album the most was the lyrics and sme beats that sounded similar to other artist that had hit songs out at the sametime. On one song she sang about "I can do this, I can do that, I can pull a rabbit out of my hat"......Ummm ok. Then "I don't need no rock to be off the block" I think she was trying to mock Jennifer Lopez. On the track "What's It Gonna Be Boy" that song sounded oddly fimilar to Brandy's "What About Us". I think the lyircs were not strong. She was just ryhming to ryhm. There was no feeling or heart into it. I think maybe next english album she should put more heart into the project instead of just singing in english. I've had this album for years now but it's going to the donation pile.
Should have been promoted more
2006-11-11 - Thalia isn't a great singer. The former soap star's abilities resemble more that of Jennifer Lopez than those of Selena or Shakira. But that doesn't matter much as the English-language debut disc of the Mexico-born and bred performer is evident of. Lead single "I Want You" (a Top 20 hit in the US) became a significant sleeper hit in fall 03, and deservedly so--despite being somewhat unmemorable unless played continuously (as it was done so upon its release) for a period of time, the pop track's shimmering sound provided Thalia with a big enough hit to garner a second ("Baby, I'm In Love"). Thalia (as the record is titled) the album isn't revolutionary but it's decent dance pop. "Baby, I'm In Love" is irresistible enough after additional listens and "Don't Look Back" is disco-infused with a likable beat. The remainder is pretty much filler, but produced decently enough that it doesn't make for too horrific of a listen. Had it been promoted more it could have been a significant release for Thalia the singer. Still Thalia the album remains a decent listen from an adept Latin star.
