  • Editorial Review:
Over the years, Tim Meadows has proven himself to be a very funny supporting player on Saturday Night Live, but he never really had a breakout character that he and Lorne Micheals could spin off into a movie--until now. Based on his lisping "Ladies Man" character, Meadows plays Leon Phelps, a late-night sex advice host of a radio show who gets fired for racking up one too many FCC fines. His producer (Karyn Parsons) gets fired with him, and she combs the Chicago stations looking for another gig while he tries to find the one old flame who would be willing to support him for the rest of his life. You see, Phelps is a sexaholic who tends to sleep with frustrated wives, much to the chagrin of the husbands who inevitably catch them in bed together. A mob of husbands have formed a group, under the leadership of Will Ferrell (playing a tired stereotype of the closeted homosexual), dedicated to hunting down Phelps and killing him. The embodiment of the '70s swinger, Phelps personifies both the good (sexual skills) and the bad (the wardrobe and fashion sense) of that icon, though the movie ends with your standard pro-family propaganda when he inevitably finds love and stability with his producer. The laughs do not come fast and furiously, sidetracked as they are by the so-called plot, but one thing must be said and said out loud: Billy Dee Williams is fantastic as the bartender-narrator. --Andy Spletzer

    The Ladies Man Reviews:
    I can't recommend this 1 Star Review
2008-09-25 - I had seen this once before and liked the silly humor but seeing it again I wondered how I missed all the crude and rude all over the story and jokes. Yes, I should have realized that is what this film is all about but I hold hope that there are films that are funny without offensive jokes and gags.

    Hillarious 4 Star Review
2008-03-17 - My son has been looking in stores trying to find this movie and could not locate it. I found it on Amazon and had it delivered as a gift in two days. Thanks Amazon!!

    SNL Gold 4 Star Review
2007-08-09 - This is a pretty good flick. Leon, the protagonist, is on the search for his secret wealthy dream girl who wants to take care of him for the rest of his life. On the way he must avoid the mob of husbands after him for sleeping with there wifes. Action as fast as the jokes, this is great buy.

    Confused? 4 Star Review
2007-01-30 - I've owned this film for a while, came across the reviews on Amazon, and thought I'd add my two cents. Many of you are probably confused by the WIDE range of star ratings. Most of us would probably agree that "SNL" films have less-than-stellar scripts, so a lot depends on the star and character. Some think that Will Ferrell is hilarious; others find him truly annoying. I think he's both. Molly Shannon does nothing for me, Adam Sandler is hit-and-miss, and Chris Farley reduces me to happy-tears every time, (though he did take part in some wretched movies.)

This one makes me laugh. A lot. It really shouldn't, because on paper it probably looks like a steaming heap of excrement, but if you like (no, make that LOVE... the film IS 90 minutes,) Tim Meadows and his Ladies Man character, then you could do worse than shell out ten bucks on it. Just make sure you watch it with friends who love the character too-- it really adds to the fun. You'll be talking with a lisp for weeks.

another bad SNL movie 2 Star Review
2006-09-25 - I liked Night at the Roxbury better than this. Of course that was a great movie though. So this is funny but do we ever get an actual story in any of these Lorne Michael's movies? Funny jokes are good but I just wish it was an actual movie and not a bad SNL skit. Highlights of the movie are the fake but still great looking Tiffany Amber Thiesen and Will Ferrel as the wrestler. Good movie to kill about 30 minutes or so on.
