Description of Home Improvement: The Complete Eighth Season:
In its eighth and final season, classic sitcom Home Improvement holds up pretty well. Sure, plenty of recurring bits have gone stale--one imagines that star Tim Allen is looking forward to the day when he'll never have to grunt again, and hiding the face of neighbor Wilson (Earl Hindman) seems more like an obligatory chore than an entertaining game--but when the show focuses on the sitcom bedrock of marriage and family, it's not only still funny but sometimes even moving. The centerpiece of the whole season is a two-part episode that starts with an abundance of jokes about Tim's discomfort with female biology--then takes a jolting turn with the revelation that Jill (Patricia Richardson) has to get a hysterectomy. What follows is both comic and refreshingly honest as it captures Jill's anger and frustration, as well as a quietly touching portrait of how spouses support each other in times of trouble. Polly Holiday (Flo on Alice) boosts this episode with a strong appearance as Jill's mother.
The rest of the season goes up and down, suffering from some pointless celebrity appearances (Morgan Fairchild, Jay Leno, Oprah Winfrey, magicians Penn & Teller) and stunt-casting (Playboy playmate Jenny McCarthy as a mechanic Tim flirts with), and the departure of Jonathan Taylor Thomas (whose teen heartthrob career never quite launched) throws off the long-established family dynamic. But even otherwise rote episodes have satisfyingly funny moments (in a Halloween episode, there's a nice bit of slapstick when Tim, dressed as a flying monkey from The Wizard of Oz, can't get his wings through a doorway). The comfortable interplay among the seasoned cast ensures that longtime fans will find much to enjoy. The extras include some brief interviews, a blooper reel, and a retrospective special. --Bret Fetzer
Home Improvement: The Complete Eighth Season Reviews:
sad to bid farewell
2008-10-06 - After watching tim and his family grow, each episode having something good from Wilson, It was with a tinge of sorrow that i watched the last season. Humor was not on par with the other seasons. Finally wilson comes out of his hiding and Al marries atlast.
A fitting end!!!
2008-09-25 - This is really a fitting end to the greatest sitcom of all time, in my opinion. True some of the episodes were kind of pointless but there has never been a series that was absolutely perfect. In any case, this was a big step up from the previous season. You almost don't want to watch the last season because you don't want to see it end. One thing you will be extremely disappointed in is the bonus features. The reunion special is nothing more than Tim, Al, Heidi, and one guy from K & B. I wanted to see a documentary on Home Improvement. Some of the episodes are really sad. I'm not going to spoil it for you. Every show needs and has its fair share of sadness and this show is no exception. Have fun with this season. I know I did. I hope you enjoy it as well.
Great Television!!!!!!
2008-09-07 - This was TV programs before they got stupid. I am a 25 yr old male and I can remember watching this show every time it came on. I grew up with this show. I really can't put into words how much this show had an impact on my life. We would watch it as a family. Recorded every episode on VHS, (yes VHS we didn't have TiVo) I would try to watcha few episodes every niht before I went to bed.
The final season, as most have said, was not the best season but had some of the most touching episodes. The show in general is amazing. Any family wanting to grow closer together should most certainly take some time out and watch a season or two of this show.
the last is a blast
2008-08-13 - Tim Allen continues (with the cast) to give it all. Fabulous seeing this last season that was not shown here in europe. Now we have the entire set and unlike some series that slowly go down hill this one keeps, to my surprise, a'climbing. Great they finally put it on DVD. Shame there is no more comming.
Always makes me laugh
2008-07-30 - A funny, funny show that I wish wouldn't have ended. Miss the original airings and have to settle now for reruns and dvds. Love the whole family and laugh during each episode. Everyone can relate to something in the show and laugh.
