2000-04-21 - While "One Of These Days" is a moving song, the one that really hits home is "Just To See You Smile". I had a really good friend in college that, even though we never officially dated, we were as close as any two people can be. Though we had a chance for a relationship, she moved away for law school and I began a career. In the interim, even though I got married and moved several times, we stayed in close contact. Just as I was getting a divorce and heading to law school myself, she found out that she was pregnant and decided to marry the father of the child. Though I protested, she cared enough for me that she did not want to saddle me with the responsibilities of family, but rather she wanted me to pursue my studies, even though I would have gladly given them up for her. All I have ever wanted was for her to be happy and this song pretty much sums up the way I still feel about her. I still maintain the hope that one day we will be together. In the interim, however, the memory of her smile, and the happiness that I brought her, are enough to sustain me. I'll even say that for me, a big Frank Sinatra fan myself, this song is as poignant as any of Old Blue Eyes' torch songs. Thanks Tim McGraw!
