IT'S NO SMALL AFFAIR WHEN A SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD ASPIRING PHOTOGRAPHER PURSUES A BEAUTIFUL OLDER WOMAN OF TWENTY-TWO IN A BIG WAY. THIS SCINTILLATING ROMANTIC COMEDY STARS JON CRYER AND DEMI MOORE AS THE UNLIKELY LOVERS WHO TEACH EACH OTHER A THINGOR TWO ABOUT LIFE.

    Description of No Small Affair:
Jon "I'm Not Matthew Broderick!" Cryer had what appeared to be a breakthrough role in this diverting but inconsequential romantic comedy. (Still, once you've broken through, you need to follow up, something Cryer didn't manage.) In fact, it proved to be more of a springboard for its other star, a then-little-known soap-opera star named Demi Moore. Cryer plays a high-school photographer with a colossal crush on a budding female rock star (Moore). She thinks he's cute--like a puppy--but he thinks her interest indicates the kind of romantic longing only a teenage boy would fantasize about with an older woman. Still, when her love life tanks, this eager beaver is there to console her, thoroughly misreading her intentions. What wit this film has springs from Cryer's kinetic, fast-talking performance as the kind of perpetually wise-cracking kid that was Broderick's stock-in-trade at that point. Otherwise, it's the kind of story only an adolescent male would find believable and moving. --Marshall Fine

    No Small Affair Reviews:
As good as you remember 4 Star Review
2009-07-19 - This movie was extremely important to me as a young teenager: the way Jon Cryer pulled off his everyman geekiness really spoke to me during a crucial time in my life. His characterization of Charles Cummings, like so many John Cusack roles, lived on in my memory as proof positive that the underdog with the slight build could not only intelligently put off the bullies around him, but wind up with the hottest girl.

This no-frills DVD is a welcome addition to my movie library. It's a good transfer, and the film is every bit as good - perhaps better? - than I remember it from countless viewings on HBO. Mr. Cryer may have gotten short shrift in the inevitable comparison with Matthew Broderick, but this film stacks up as well against "Ferris Bueller" in terms of geeky-cool any day. Demi Moore is at her '80s best: both demure and sexy, she's the perfect foil for Cummings' affections. The soundtrack is killer, and there's an actual big sigh of relief at the lack of involved menu pages or special features. What...you need a "25th Anniversary Edition" with interviews explaining the detailed plotlines, and what it all means? Pfagh. Watch the film, relive the boy/man you used to be, and be glad that Charles Cummings was there to help point the way.

Watchable but cheesy 2 Star Review
2009-04-05 - This movie seems very dated. Some 80s movies still play well, but this one seems to suffer a little more from time than others. The basic storyline about a kid who uses his savings to help someone find her future is kind of cute, but the details of the movie are cheesy be it the somewhat unrealistic photography angle, the gratuitous 1980s topless scenes or the obvious lip-synching of Demi Moore. There's just something about this movie that doesn't quite click for me, but it's still not too bad as far as old movies go.

No small affair 4 Star Review
2008-03-24 - This movie is a bit of a guilty pleasure, silly 80's costumes and all. I especially enjoy Jon Cryer's "coming of age" portrayal. He's true to his love of photography, tolerates his crazy family with wry humor, and follows his own path. But when that path intersects with Demi Moore, his well-intentioned attempts to win her favor are classic. Formulaic or not, he and Demi bring a charm to the movie that makes it a personal favorite over and above some of the more well-known 80's hits by the Brat Pack.

No Small Cab Fare 4 Star Review
2007-09-04 - I must admit I'm a Cryer fan. I loved him in "Pretty in Pink" and "Hiding Out". This movie was a major intro for him and he does a fine job portraying a teen that falls in love with an older woman. As he photographs the scenic city of San Francisco some people won't get out of his Ansel Adams type pictures. Lucky for him as one of them turns out to be the gorgeous young Demi Moore. When he meets her and finds out she has a husky singing voice he falls in love and ends up spending lots of money to make sure she becomes well known. A fun romantic comedy that everyone should see at least once. I bought the DVD and the quality is good but it is overpriced since it doesn't contain any extras.
