Proving that truth is often greater than fiction, the handsome production of Seabiscuit offers a healthy alternative to Hollywood's staple diet of mayhem. With superior production values at his disposal, writer-director Gary Ross (Pleasantville) is a bit too reverent toward Laura Hillenbrand's captivating bestseller, unnecessarily using archival material--and David McCullough's familiar PBS-styled narration--to pay Ken Burns-like tribute to Hillenbrand's acclaimed history of Seabiscuit, the knobby-kneed thoroughbred who "came from behind" in the late 1930s to win the hearts of Depression-weary Americans. That caveat aside, Ross's adaptation retains much of the horse-and-human heroism that Hillenbrand so effectively conveyed; this is a classically styled "legend" movie like The Natural, which was also heightened by a lushly sentimental Randy Newman score. Led by Tobey Maguire as Seabiscuit's hard-luck jockey, the film's first-rate cast is uniformly excellent, including William H. Concise Review
2009-12-27 - A fabulous production that, despite a few very near-sighted reviews here, does a terrific job of providing a detailed and emersive look at the history of not only one of horse racing's greatest animals but also the people close to him. Yes, somewhat documentary-like at times, the film capably captures not only the realm of horse racing in the '30s but all of the peripheral events of the times. Events which are integral basics necessary to understand the improbable places from which hope can emerge, particularly when conditions are so desperate. A true heartwarming delivery of courage and diligence from man and animal alike that could not adequately be told to it's full truthful effect without incorporation of all of the historical aspects. A feel good movie with much the same spirit as October Sky. Jeff Bridges is superb as Biscuit's owner with great support by the rest of the cast. Tasteful handling of even tragic situations make this one for the entire family...and we know how rare those are.
This review is based on the dvd version which has excellent video and audio transfers.
