  • Editorial Review:
Jingoism, beefcake, military hardware, and a Giorgio Moroder rock score reign supreme over taste and logic in this Tony Scott film about a maverick trainee pilot (Tom Cruise) who can't follow the rules at a Navy aviation training facility. The dogfight sequences between American and Soviet jets at the end are absolutely mechanical, though audiences loved it at the time. The love story between Cruise's character and that of Kelly McGillis is like flipping through pages of advertising in a glossy magazine. This designer action movie from 1986 would be all the more appalling were it not for the canny casting of good actors in dumb parts. Standouts include Anthony Edwards--who makes a nice impression as Cruise's average-Joe pal--and the relatively unknown Meg Ryan in a small but memorable appearance. --Tom Keogh

    Top Gun [Region 2] Reviews:
Worth the price for the outstanding photography 4 Star Review
2009-11-29 - "Top Gun" is a nice movie and the best part of it is the photography. From the carrier sights to the F-14 flights, this is how this movie made to my favourites list. The Blu-Ray edition brings this to a new dimension - seeing it in a large HD TV makes all the previous editions (DVD) look like old photographs. Worth the price.

    Great Action 4 Star Review
2009-11-17 - I really enjoyed this movie because of all the aircraft action & I like the area in which it was filmed ! I live in the SoCal area and frequent the are where the movie was filmed.

    Blu-Ray Review 5 Star Review
2009-10-30 - I'm gonna review the quality of the blu-ray version of this movie. I'm not gonna review the movie itself as there are enough reviews of it. I was surprised with the quality of this movie, I wasn't expecting an spectacular image quality but it exceeded my expectations. Sure the quality is not like a new release film, but the quality is outstanding considering how old is this movie. My only gripe is that image quality is not consistent in some parts of the movie(those are few), but I think that's more related to the camera work in the movie than with the HD conversion. The audio is superb, and that's a good thing especially with this movie. Recommended buy for HDTV owners.

Top Gun Blu Ray 4 Star Review
2009-10-26 - I'm excited to give this to my husb. for Christmas. Good service, and good price for a Blu ray!

Please Don't Tell Anyone 4 Star Review
2009-09-25 - Okay, I confess. TOP GUN is a rarity--it's one of the few Tom Cruise films I can tolerate. (The other two being Rain Man and Valkyrie.) In fact, I not only tolerate TOP GUN. . .I flat out like the heck out of it, even after all these years. Yes, the plot is farfetched and silly, no armed services would put up for one nanosecond the antics of an undisciplined pilot, and someone looking like Kelly McGillis as a jet pilot instructor at a naval aviation school will actually happen when herds of elephants swim the Atlantic, but it matters not: This Eighties classic gets up and moves just like the F-14s bolting through the skies.

Cast, cast, cast; that's what makes an action/drama succeed. And here we have a topnotch ensemble, from Cruise himself as the "need for speed" Maverick, a loose cannon living on the edge. McGillis's character as instructor-turned-love-interest is unbelievable, but easy on the eye; Val Kilmer as top rival Ice is cool, calm, collected, and deliciously confrontational; Anthony Edwards as Maverick's cockpit sidekick Goose provides consistent comedy relief; and Tom Skerritt as flight school commander Viper is as good as it gets. Oh, there's even this little cameo by a young actress named Meg Ryan that quietly hints here's an actress with some chops. The jet fighter sequences are breathtaking, the action and drama relentless, the acting first rate--and it's all augmented by a sensational musical score. All in all, TOP GUN is a keeper, Tom Cruise or no Tom Cruise. Could've done without the beach volleyball scene, but that's just me.
