  • Editorial Review:
After a three-year assignment in the field FBI agent Henry Durand (Colin Hanks) returns home with his fiance (Selma Blair) only to find his once-dowdy over weight mother Martha has transformed into the highly attractive enlightened Marty (Meg Ryan) who dates every night of the week. When Marty meets the mysterious Tommy (Antonio Banderas) Henry is ordered to spy on his mother after learning Tommy may be involved in an international art theft ring.

Description of My Mom's New Boyfriend:
The premise is delicious: A young, by-the-book FBI agent (Colin Hanks) is assigned his new highest-profile assignment yet--spying on his own mother (Meg Ryan). My Mom's New Boyfriend is a romantic comedy long on both romance and comedy, and gives Ryan her first film in a long time where she can take the laughs and run with them. Viewers will remember, with a grateful sigh, why she long reigned as the queen of American romantic comedy. Ryan plays Marty, devoted mom, who last saw her son, Henry (Hanks), three years ago when she was unhealthy, coarse, and overweight (looking like she might have borrowed Monica's fat suit from Friends). When Henry returns home from his secret op, fiancée in tow (Selma Blair), Marty's still coarse, but has become a babe with a healthy libido. ("Oh Henry, lighten up!" is Marty's oft-repeated refrain.) Henry is horrified, but his girlfriend, Emily, is entranced. In fact, some of the film's best chemistry is between these two gifted actresses, as they spark and feed off each other's energy. When Marty takes up with the sultry Tommy (Antonio Banderas), Henry gets the ultimate "TMI" assignment: spying on his mom and her honey, suspected in an art-theft ring. Hanks squirms convincingly, Banderas smolders, and Ryan truly sparkles, giving her wacky side free rein. If the plot has a few potholes, it doesn't matter, since the cast is so stellar and has such magnetism. By sheer determination and talent, the ensemble delivers laughs and poignancy, by turns. Extras include deleted scenes (and a few memorable bloopers), and a behind-the-scenes featurette on filming on location in northern Louisiana. --A.T. Hurley

    My Mom's New Boyfriend Reviews:
Not Exactly the Funniest Romantic Comedy 2 Star Review
2009-12-14 - Colin Hanks is an FBI agent Henry Durand, whose beautiful mother Martha (Meg Ryan) is dating a handsome and mysterious guy named Tommy (Antonio Banderas). To his greater surprise, Henry discovers that his mom's new boyfriend is in fact an international art thief his FBI office is after. Things get more complicated when Henry has to spy on his own mother, and Henry's fiancée Emily (Selma Blair) working for FBI gets involved in his mission.

Though I do not think "My Mom's New Boyfriend" is a terrible film as some reviewers say, it is not as funny or entertaining as it should be. The film written and directed by George Gallo has certainly a mildly interesting (though implausible) story, but it never knows how to make the most of it. The comic scenes often look clumsy, poorly executed, and not thought out well, largely relying on Colin Hank's embarrassed face. The two leads lack chemistry and Salma Blair's character has little to do.

But what happened to Meg Ryan's career? Why did she accept doing this? The idea of Meg Ryan in fat suit is already questionable to begin with, but Martha she plays here is not really a likable character. This is especially so when she overacts, playing a slightly selfish person not in an enjoyable way, and the film's wacky humor means pointless car action (with Meg Ryan yelling repeatedly) and a drunk Italian chef serenading on the front lawn.

Delightful, filling, and enormously well acted 5 Star Review
    2009-09-29 - I really liked this movie.

It had the typical fill of Meg Ryan Charm and Antonio Banderas's passion. I loved the comedy. And the fact that I could watch these two older stars shine as they had when they were younger.

Yes. I want to see my favorite stars in roles as they age. It gives me hope seeing older people shine in the craft they do so well.

Because charm and wit doesn't dull just because you get wrinkles in your face and pains in your body. The human spirit lives on and on. And that aging stars can perform so well is an underlying message when you put these time-tested stars in a movie making vehicle.

Actually, the title of this show makes it sound like Meg Ryan is going to be frumpy. She was not. She was the shining star and that made the movie ever more surprising.

    Great Movie 5 Star Review
