ESCAPED PRISONERS FIND AN UNCHARTED ISLAND INHABITED BY GIANT ANIMALS. BASED ON THE JULES VERNE'S NOVEL.

    Description of Mysterious Island (Widescreen):
Jules Verne's classic adventure is perfectly matched with Ray Harryhausen's timeless movie magic in Mysterious Island. Based on Verne's sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, this rousing Civil War-era fantasy begins when a band of Union war prisoners (and one Confederate straggler) escape in a hot-air balloon, which crash-lands on the titular island of mystery. Verne's novel doesn't include any gigantic creatures, but Harryhausen's version--under the capable direction of genre specialist Cy Endfield--features giant oysters, bees, a prehistoric Phororhacos (a giant chickenlike bird!), an undersea cephalopod, a giant crab, and enough danger to keep its resourceful ensemble on constant alert. Captain Nemo (Herbert Lom, ably filling James Mason's shoes) is a third-act hero, pursuing an ill-fated dream to save humanity from hunger and war. The action may be too intense for younger viewers, but Endfield's pacing and Harryhausen's stop-motion mastery make Mysterious Island a wondrous precursor to Harryhausen's follow-up classic, Jason and the Argonauts. --Jeff Shannon

    Mysterious Island (Widescreen) Reviews:
Mysterious Island Movie Reveiw 5 Star Review
2009-09-29 - This movie is a must see for people who like old Sci-Fi movies. Very well put together for the technology of this era.

Rainy Day Fare 3 Star Review
2009-09-18 - I won't say this is the best old sci-fi adventure film I own and have watched, although it's not the absolute worst either. If you're bored out of your mind one rainy afternoon, having absolutely nothing better to do, you might find this film a mildly entertaining diversion and even fun. The kids, the dog, and the cat will no doubt like and enjoy watching as a small band of stranded war refugees and a pair of clueless, shipwrecked women battle the elements and the strange island's grossly overgrown wildlife population--enormous animals that wreak havoc during an already desperate situation. In the end, the resourceful party is saved as Captain Nemo valiantly comes to the rescue. In entertainment value, and as a part of an older film collection, the movie is worth the asking price.

So so DVD 4 Star Review
2009-09-07 - I bought this DVD to replace my old VHS copy. Since I first saw it I have always loved this film for it's sense of adventure and fantasy. The Harryhausen special effects are great as always and the Bernard Herrmann score is a gem. But the quality of the DVD is not the greatest. This film has obviously not been restored in any sense. Some of the scenes are completely washed out and for most of the movie the sound is terrible. But it is widescreen and looks nice on a big screen TV. The best thing about the disc is the bonus extra on the work of Ray Harryhausen. That alone is reason enough to own this disc. And the film still is alot of fun to watch.

    WIDESCREEN WARNING... 2 Star Review
2009-08-08 - Warning before you buy!! This particular "Widescreen" version appears to be nothing more than 4:3 "Zoomed" (not the best term I agree) to 16:9, which results , for me anyway, in a terrible picture of, giant heads, and half bodies w/ most of the original movie chopped off...it DOES fill the screen however,...which seems to be the most important thing to 90% of viewers...

A pat on the back for the seller 4 Star Review
2009-06-14 - The physical quality of the product was as advertised. Packing and
shipping of the DVD was well done.
( After watching the production, I realized why I haven't been
    to movie for 30 years!)
