Editorial Review:
Tom Hanks writes, directs and co-stars in this refreshing, big-hearted comedy that captures the overnight triumph of an American rock band during the glory days of rock and roll.
Description of That Thing You Do! - Tom Hank's Extended Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition):
Tom Hanks's debut as a writer and director is a lively, affectionate account of the shooting-star career of a forgotten (fictional) '60s pop-rock band called The Wonders--as in "one-hit wonders." Hanks plays the manager of the group, which includes drummer Guy "Sticks" Patterson (Tom Everett Scott) who works the floor at his parents' appliance store in Erie, Pennsylvania; Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech), the talented and temperamental lead singer and songwriter; Lenny (Steve Zahn), the goofy guitarist; and Ethan Embry as a geeky little fellow identified in the cast list only as "The Bass Player." The movie traces their meteoric rise and fall, from cutting their first record, to going on tour with a Phil Spector/Motown-type revue, to the internal tensions that lead to the band's disintegration, which comes when they fail to follow up their smash hit single, "That Thing You Do!" And that song, by the way, is so catchy it would definitely have been a hit in 1964--and deserves to be one today. This delightful movie would make a great double-bill with Allison Anders's wonderful Grace of My Heart. --Jim Emerson
That Thing You Do! - Tom Hank's Extended Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition) Reviews:
Don't let the title of "Tom Hank's Extented Cut" fool you!!
2009-11-13 - I purchased two discs of That Thing You Do, expected extented director's cut and the original version as promised. Well, after pressing the menu button countless times. There is no Tom Hank's director's cut appearing on this Two- Disc Special Edition, only it has the original version but no director's cut at all. I am very furious at Amazon for lying to me.
That Thing You Do!
2009-11-11 - This is a really fun movie. I love "reliving" life in the 60s and this has it all! Just be ready to sing the song from the movie all day after watching it.
Something special about "That Thing"
2009-09-08 - That Thing You Do goes back to a time before rock and roll was totally dominated by corporate radio. In 1964 DJ's were free to play music they thought their listeners would enjoy. How else could a garage band from Erie,PA, take a record they recorded in a church building to number 2 in the nation. Well defined characters and a pleasant and original soundtrack. If you liked rock and roll in it's infancy, you will enjoy this movie. Great early performances by actors which later become household names. Tom Hanks is outstanding not only in front of the camera, but behind it as well.
It's cute but forgettable.
2009-08-29 - That Thing You Do! was written and directed by Tom Hanks and he also co-stars in this swinging comedy. I like this film but I always forget the ending of it. Liv Tyler and Steve Zahn make this movie fun and joyous. I like that silly song the band sings but I wouldn't say this film broke any new ground, Hanks is a talented guy but I would never buy this film, too corny for my taste.
ROCKIN!!!
2009-08-09 - This movie has been one of my favorites for a long time and it is impossible to find at stores so when I saw this version I snatched it up. It is a super fun time and all of the extra features make it even better. a must have addition to your movie collection.
