Description of Ike - Countdown to D-Day:
Tom Selleck gives a restrained yet powerful performance as General Dwight D. Eisenhower in Ike: Countdown to D-Day. This made-for-cable feature focuses on the solemn, brilliant but plain-speaking Ike as he fine-tunes, over 90 days, tactical and political concerns involved with the Allies' imminent D-Day invasion of Normandy, i.e., America and Britain's long-awaited joint assault against Nazi-occupied Europe. A strong cast--James Remar as General Omar Bradley, Timothy Bottoms as Ike's assistant, Walter Bedell "Beetle" Smith--anchors the film's mesmerizing, blow-by-blow account of Eisenhower's leadership under the shadow of many uncertainties (predicting the weather for D-Day becomes a suspenseful refrain) and pressure from conflicting egos (Montgomery, DeGaulle, Patton). Ian Mune is a delight as a wary, darkly bemused Churchill, who encourages Ike's strategy of supreme leadership and low-key diplomacy. The script by Lionel Chetwynd (DC 9/11: Time of Crisis) captures the unbearable tension of commencing the invasion--and awaiting the results. --Tom Keogh

Ike - Countdown to D-Day Reviews:
Excellent biopic of a Great American hero 4 Star Review
2009-08-22 - I wasn't expecting much from this television movie. I knew it was relatively low budget and I couldn't quite see Tom Selleck in the role of Eisenhower. Boy was I surprised. Selleck did a great job of portraying Ike and the screenplay was tight and accurate.

Like all D-Day movies, Ike--Countdown to D-Day focused on the momentous decisions that whirled around the invasion. Astute political leadership was more important to the eventual success of the invasion. If anything, the movie underplayed the politics of getting this multi-national force to work together for a coordinated assault. From above and below, Ike had to assuage huge egos and keep everybody supporting a plan fraught with monstrous risk for the world of the day and posterity.

If you'd like to learn more about Eisenhower, I recommend his memoir Crusade in Europe and Stephen Ambrose's Eisenhower: Soldier and President (The Renowned One-Volume Life). (Selleck read both these books in preparation for the role.)

Interesting Historical Telemovie 5 Star Review
2009-07-15 - This is a quite a good telemovie about one of the most important leaders of the 20th Century set during a cruical part of World War Two. I was half expecting to see Magnum PI playing General Eisenhower, but this wasn't the case. Tom Selleck did an excellent job protraying Ike and he obviously did his research. The only thing I didn't like was that most of this telemovie was shot inside buildings, but I suppose being a telemovie, there wasn't much of a budget for CGI & special effects. Having read "Eisenhower" by Stephan Ambrose and watched documentaries about Eisenhower, I would love to see a mini-series about Eisenhower that covered his life from his birth to his death, as I consider him to be one of the most historically important people of the 20th Century.

I Like Ike 4 Star Review
2009-07-07 - Ike depicted well by Tom Selleck. A history and bio of Ike leading up to D-Day that was well handled in this movie. Selleck was a pro in this role. A much underarted movie.

An Outstanding Movie: perhaps the best war movie I have ever seen 5 Star Review
2009-05-22 - and I've seen many. This film gives insight into how wars are really waged, long before battle is joined, and how Ike waged it. An outstanding achievement, with many memorable scenes and outstanding dialog.

One of my All-Time favorite movies. Period.

Good insight into Ike's personality 3 Star Review
2009-04-24 - This film is a true representation of General Eisenhower's personality and style of leadership as he plans and prepares to lead the Allied Forces in the largest battle in history - the invasion of Normandy.
