Editorial Review:
Jesse Stone is back! When his friend and fellow cop is shot during a visit to Boston, small town police chief Jesse Stone (Tom Selleck) risks his life and career to solve the crime while also investigating the disappearance of a missing child in this exciting fifth installment in the popular Jesse Stone movies based on the best-selling books by Robert B. Parker.
Description of Jesse Stone: Thin Ice:
Tom Selleck returns to the role of Jesse Stone, the troubled but uncompromising police chief of Paradise, Massachusetts in Jesse Stone: Thin Ice. The fifth made-for-television movie in the Stone series, and the first not directly adapted from a specific novel by Robert B. Parker, the engrossing Thin Ice is an apt title for a story that finds a pair of investigations and Stone's relationship with Paradise's town council looking perilous. Wounded during a murderous attempt on Captain Healy (Stephen McHattie) of the Massachusetts State Police, Stone sets out to find the would-be killer against the wishes of Internal Affairs, the Paradise council, and Healy himself. Meanwhile, a woman (Camryn Manheim) whose newborn baby was stolen from her and presumed dead years ago appeals for help from a skeptical Stone. The chief's usual problems with alcohol and the breakup of his marriage continue to haunt him, too. But none of that lessens Stone's determination to follow his own moral code as he takes on his superiors' shady ethics, a would-be killer, and a possible kidnapper.
Selleck, the show's co-writer and executive producer, is much older than Parker's original character. But he certainly captures the soul and rhythms of the quintessential Parker hero, and brings a fitting, gruff decency to the role. Kathy Baker is very good as one of the two officers under Stone's command (Kohl Sudduth is quirky, good fun as the other cop). William Devane is a grizzled cipher as Stone's chain-smoking shrink, and Leslie Hope provides a film noir edge as Stone's cynical lover, a cop with the rather improbable name of Sidney Greenstreet. --Tom Keogh

Jesse Stone: Thin Ice Reviews:
"Thin Ice" holds up
2009-12-19 - "Thin Ice," the most recent DVD in the series of TV movies inspired by Robert B. Parker's Jesse Stone books, offers further proof that Tom Selleck has truly made Stone his own. The film's laconic dialogue, wry humor and thoughtful exploration of this flawed lawman's journey back from the brink of lovelorn alcoholism is real and touching. Kathy Baker's Rose almost lets me forget Viola Davis as the no-longer-mentioned Molly, and Camryn Manheim's few scenes as a distraught mother could wring tears from a slab of rock. The mist-shrouded photography and moody, low-key music add just the right touches. Recommended, especially for those who've seen the first four Jesse Stone movies.
Great series of tele movies
2009-12-17 - Throughly enjoyed this latest in the Jesse Stone series. Unlike a lot of movies/shows relying on frantic action pacing, these movies pull you into the lives of the characters, especially Jesse. The characters are interesting and the plots well conceived.
My only "disappointment" with Thin Ice is it finished in a way that obviously cries out for a sequel, so on the plus side I guess there is another movie on the way!
Well Done Series of Mystery Movies
2009-12-16 - have all five of the movies in this series. Tom Selleck is at his best in all of them. All are very entertaining and suspenseful. The cast of supporting actors in the series is complementing. I would recommend this series to anyone who is a Tom Selleck fan or likes a good mystery, drama, and a movie with a little action in it.
Jesse Stone/Thin ICE
2009-12-14 - Dissapointed with this fifth in a series. Tom Selleck as usual was, witty, and I watched it all anyway. However, did not like the ending where he was fired. If you like Tom Selleck, you will like this one, be prepared for a little bit of a dull movie.
Kudos to Tom Selleck
2009-12-01 - You know what?
I'll just create this "in the clear."
And I'll state and write my prejudice up front:
Tom Selleck is one of the most UNDERappreciated actors in my generation.
All of these four DVDs are massively worthwhile, as I'm sure the fifth is.
Look. Let's be plain.
Either you like Tom Selleck our you don't. But you wouldn't be here if you didn't appreciate his artistry. You wouldn't be wasting time reading this. Got you.
I'm buying this DVD. Period. BECAUSE it features Tom Selleck.
