  • Editorial Review:
When Tim Burton and Michael Keaton announced that they'd had enough of the Batman franchise, director Joel Schumacher stepped in (with Burton as coproducer) to make this action-packed extravaganza starring Val Kilmer as the caped crusader. Batman is up against two of Gotham City's most colorful criminals, the Riddler (a role tailor-made for funnyman Jim Carrey) and the diabolical Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones), who join forces to conquer Gotham's population with a brain-draining device. Nicole Kidman plays the seductive psychologist who wants to know what makes Batman tick. Boasting a redesigned Batmobile and plenty of new Bat hardware, Batman Forever also introduces Robin the Boy Wonder (Chris O'Donnell) whose close alliance with Batman led more than a few critics to ponder the series' homoerotic subtext. No matter how you interpret it, Schumacher's take on the Batman legacy is simultaneously amusing, lavishly epic, and prone to chronic sensory overload. --Jeff Shannon

    Batman Forever [Region 2] Reviews:
    Very bland... 2 Star Review
2008-10-16 - Campy Batman can work with a good cast and right atmosphere, but here it mixes with dark Batsy and has a bad cast. (Except Jim Carrery.)

BATMAN ON ACID! 3 Star Review
2008-10-14 - 'Batman Forever' had many roadblocks to break through to get made! First off, the studio was afraid to let Burton direct another Batman film fearing it would be so dark, it would appall the general audience. Second this made Keaton uneasy about committing to the new film, so...... enter Joel Schumacher and Val Kilmer(Keaton's lips replacement). The only thing left of Burton in this film is the opening WB logo turning to Dark Knight ala the first two Batman films and the ending at the creepy Arkham Asylum, in between is a lot of Burton imitations,....so maybe the folks watching won't notice...I guess?

Unfortunately, it's impossible not to notice as this cartoon vision of the Dark Knight unfolds into a psychedelic acid laced circus! Two great performances by are next pecking order villains Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face and Jim Carrey as The Riddler. While over the top they both fit the film's cartoon-ish acid nightmare style and make this film better than it is. One villain would have been plenty, but we all know you can't make a third movie without adding way too much of everything!

There is no danger, this is pure fantasy and Batman can do whatever comes to mind, without the aid of his "Batgadgets", although he has many. Surprisingly this film does resemble the Batman comics of the late 40's and 50's, which is a period that I really don't care for. The action is big, loud and campy like the TV show, but not an good. The psychological aspect doesn't work either, but the film is entertaining to a point, in a juvenile way. I could have done without the quick cuts of Batman's nipples, crotch and butt!... What's up with that? I give the film 2 1/2 stars and the 2 disc special edition boost it to 3 stars. It's DVD transfer is excellent and the 2 disc has more than enough extras for this film......now if I can just get through 'Batman & Robin"! ;-b

Holy Action Scenes, Batman! 5 Star Review
2008-10-11 - After the modest "Batman" and the disappointing "Batman Returns" comes
"Batman Forever," featuring an all-star cast: Val Kilmer, Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones (Best Supporting Actor, "The Fugitive; 1993), Jim Carrey ("The Mask"), Nicole Kidman ("Far And Away," "To Die For," "Days Of Thunder"), Chris O'Donnell ("The Three Musketeers") and Drew Barrymore ("E.T.," "Firestarter") in a very minor role as one of Two-Face's (Jones) henchwomen. This new installment in the franchise, which sadly went into hibernation after "Batman & Robin" and was fully reborn out of the ashes with the spectacular "Batman Begins" (which was better than "Batman" and
"Batman Returns") fires on all cylinders here. The storyline is much better developed, as the first two films had a comic-book feel to them and lacked any emotional depth to the characters and physical depth to the action sequences. Rated PG for some strong stylized action.

Who thought this was BAD!!?? 5 Star Review
2008-09-27 - I found this movie very brilliant and outstanding!!!!
I loved it very enjoyable, since I was a kid!Batman Forever (Two-Disc Special Edition)

The Riddler, Two Face, Robin and bat crap. 2 Star Review
2008-08-26 - Its bad, its green and the bright colors are out of control, Its Batman Forever. The movie has a new director whos name is Joel Schumacher. Whenever I think of this movie I think of greeeeeeen!! The new Batman is Val Kilmer, hes not the best choice but he gets the job done. Which is probably what Joel Schumacher was thinking while making this candy scented bat crap. The movie was passible but that dosent mean much. Jim Carrey was good as The Riddler and was my favorite villian out of Batman 3 and 4. My favorite comedy scene from that movie was when E. Nigma absorbs his bosses knowledge.
Next is Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face. Not alot to say but what happened, Billy D. Williams played as Harvey Dent in 1 and 2 but not 3! It was probably because he didnt want to be in this crappy movie. Chris O'Donnel plays as Robin. He has a fit about everything and complains to much, but its a substantial update since the 1960's Robin played by Burt Ward. Then thiers the love intrest Dr. Chase Merridth played by Nicole Kidman, her Character is pretty shallow like all the other girlfriends of Batman. Alfred is again (and for all four movies) played by Micheal Guff. Not much to say but that he had a great performance in the Batman movies. It was defenitiley dumbing it down for a wider audience. This movie gets 2 1/2 complainig Robins out of 5. Tomorrow ill be reviewing Batman and Robin. God help me.
