Description of The Towering Inferno / Volcano:

Towering Inferno: Disaster movies used to work because there was little certainty as to who would survive. Not so in this film, really an amalgam of two original stories, about a group of well-to-do celebrants at the top floor of a skyscraper. Cheapo electrical wiring and bad construction management cause an enormous blaze at the lower floors, steadily rising to consume the revelers. Newman's an architect, McQueen a firefighter, and Fred Astaire a kind old gentleman, for which he was Oscar-nominated. O.J. Simpson plays a security guard who rescues a cat. Now that's a disaster. --Keith Simanton

Volcano: Get mindless for awhile with this 1997 disaster flick, starring the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles as a funky place for lava to spew, plus Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche as the brave souls who know how to shut off the spout. Director Mick Jackson (The Bodyguard) wastes no time getting to the good stuff--it's happening even before opening credits are over--and neither should anyone in the mood for technical efficiency without the burden of art. --Tom Keogh

The Towering Inferno / Volcano Reviews:
Desaster film lover 5 Star Review
2008-08-10 - If you like desaster films this double header is a block buster. Both films are A1.

All-star trashy fun! 4 Star Review
2008-07-28 - While Volcano is trashy fun with an emphasis on special effects, I definitely bought this double feature for The Towering Inferno. It rates alongside The Poseidon Adventure as one of the great disaster films of all time, and still holds up well today. The cast is top notch, from top billed stars including Steve McQueen and Paul Newman, to campy cameos from the likes of Fred Astaire, and names which have grown in either stature or infamy as the years have passed... O.J. Simpson, and Susan Flannery who found late stardom as the matriarch of The Bold and The Beautiful. The pre-CGI special effects are good, and while there is much fun to be had guessing which of the big stars will live or die, there's also plenty of tangible suspense in the situations and set pieces of the inferno itself. Top this off with garish Seventies decor and fashion, and Richard Chamberlain's OTT bad guy, and you have a fantastic couple of hours entertainment. This film is just begging for a remake!

the towering inferno & volcano 5 Star Review
2008-07-20 - These are both great movies. The towering inferno is an older movie but a classic. The volcano is another terrific movie.

Not Anamorphic Widescreen 3 Star Review
2008-04-06 - Despite what the packaging may say, neither movie is presented in anamorphic widescreen. The menus for each DVD are 16x9 and play fine on a widescreen tv, but both movies play in 4x3 letterboxed mode and do not fill the screen.

Classic action and modern adventure 5 Star Review
2007-02-17 - Foe those that enjoy the classic disaster movies the towering inferno needs to be on the list. Volcano is a newer movie in the same genre. The critics of such movies will disclaim all the flaws they see- but the picture as a whole is a fast paced action/ drama showing epic proportions. The older movies of this type were NOT using computer graghics but many other resourceful means to make the shots look as good as they could. Enjoy and follow the action.
