In a tale of two Travises, No More Looking Over My Shoulder finds our Skynyrd-tonk hero torn between Nashville cliché and touching artistry--divided, almost perfectly, between the first and second halves of the 10-song collection. Unfortunately, it's the fluff that fronts the album, dominated by trite party music ("Rough Around the Edges," "Girls Like That") and schmaltzy ballads ("For You," "If I Lost You"). Then, though, things come to life. Tritt shines with Bruce Springsteen's macho-but-tender "Tougher Than the Rest" (an appropriate selection), demonstrates his Southern-boy restless streak with the roadhouse-soulful "Start the Car," and delivers some legit, downbeat depth with "Mission of Love," a weepy waltz about the struggles of the broken family. The best advice is to listen to this album back-to-front, or not at all. --Neal Weiss

Travis Tritt 
2008-02-23 - I've always been a Travis Tritt fan and the CD "No More Looking Over My Shoulder" is not new but still wonderful. The cut, "If I Lost You" was especially meaningful when my husband had quadruple bypass heart surgery. Thanks for making it available and at a good price.
Identity Crisis? 
2002-05-12 - I'd have to pretty much agree with Amazon's appraisal on this one. Travis has always had a bit of a split personality on his albums, but somehow it seems more obvious here. On the one hand, we have the "I'm so macho" Travis on tracks like "Rough Around the Edges" & "Tougher Than the Rest" (the latter written by Springsteen & actually a pretty nice mid-tempo tune despite the phony bravado). On the other hand, we have the "I'm really just a softy" Travis on ballads like "If I Lost You", "For You" (downright dreary & depressing), & "I'm All the Man". "Rough Around the Edges" & "Girls Like That" basically sound like recyclings of songs like "T-R-O-U-B-L-E" & "Bible Belt" from his previous albums. It seems that when he runs out of ideas, he resorts to this type of tune. "Mission of Love" is a standard traditional-style country ballad with a modern theme, but he does a nice job on it. Far and away the best track on the album is his cover of the great Jude Cole blues-rocker "Start the Car". A great choice for Travis to cover.
Travis had a great string of albums to kick off his career, but somehow this one doesn't measure up. The formula's starting to sound a bit tired.
Great Title Song
2001-12-12 - This is not his strongest album, but it's very, very good. The love ballads are enjoyable, particularly "The Road to You." Worth the money just for the title song that deals with the liberating power of forgiveness.
If you like Travis Tritt you will love this CD.
