Description of Green Lantern: First Flight (Single-Disc Edition):
Green Lantern: First Flight is an animated and lively origin story about the transformation of test pilot Hal Jordan into a member of an intergalactic society watching over the universe. Flying an experimental jet one day, Jordan (voiced by Law and Order: Special Victims Unit's Christopher Meloni) encounters a dying alien who is a Green Lantern protector of Earth's sector of the cosmos. The alien's ring, a repository of enormous power granted by a council of elders called the Guardians, zips onto Jordan's finger, but neither the Guardians nor other Green Lanterns are ready to accept him as an unproven member. Complicating things for Jordan is the fact that the Green Lantern tasked with mentoring him, Sinestro (Victor Garber), is plotting the destruction of the Guardians with the acquisition of "yellow power," the only force that makes the Lanterns' green power useless.
Jordan's resilience and willingness to throw himself in harm's way for the good of everyone gain respect, but his inevitable showdown with Sinestro is an epic fight. This PG-13 feature is a bit bloody, and there are a few swear words, but most of the violence arises from that familiar, shape-shifting light emanating from Jordan's ring. Happily, there is some of the old DC Comics wit in the way his Green Lantern ring shapes its beam into such imaginative weapons as a golf club and a flyswatter. --Tom Keogh
Green Lantern: First Flight (Single-Disc Edition) Reviews:
Decent Animation, Great Voice Actors, Poor Adaptation from Comic Continuity
2009-11-01 - If you're an adult, you might not enjoy this. It might be alright for kids, though parents should be cautioned about the somewhat graphic violence, but I found my self bored and stupified. I'll get my fix for superhero cartoons from 'Venture Brothers' thank you very much.
The story does not resemble actual Green Lantern continuity, and this is what let me down the most. Not only is the original green lantern story much more interesting and dramatic, it's better crafted.. for a DC comic. The movie's plot is filled with plot holes, and too many changes from the series that have a negative lackluster influence.
The artwork is nothing terrible, nor is it anything spectacular. I found the certain inconsistencies rather bothersome. At times the violence was graphic and bloody, other times it was childish and silly. I was not offended by the gore; I would have liked to have seen more of it. I understand the need to tone down graphic imagery for the youngters, but pick a style and stick with it.
I hated 'First Flight. The End.
Now come the negative votes for having a different opinion than everyone else.
Green Lantern: First Flight
2009-10-28 - Great movie on how Hal Jordan became the Green Lantern. if you're a comic book fan, pick this one up.
Not the Brightest Light.
2009-10-27 - I just finished watching "Sinestro: First Flight." Or was it "The Green Lantern Corps Movie?" It couldn't be called "Green Lantern: First Flight" because it was barely about Hal Jordan, Green Lantern. Could it? And yet, it was.
Anyway, as you might surmise, I was disappointed in this animated movie. I expected a better treatment of Hal Jordan, the person and the superhero. Instead, we got the life story of Sinestro and a story of battle involving the entire Green Lantern Corps. I feel a bit misled. I like Hal Jordan...and wanted to see more of him, learn more about him as a person, and learn more about him as he learned to use his powers. Sadly, this movie didn't deliver. The storyline is pretty basic and is all action-driven, with little thought given to character development.
Disc Two had some interesting special features, like an interview with Geoff Johns, writer; a cartoon of Daffy Duck as the "Green Loontern" that was quite humorous; and four episodes of the "Justice League" animated series (which are already included in the JL seasons on DVD).
Unfortunately, "Green Lantern: First Flight" follows in the tradition of the other animated Direct-to-DVD movies DC Comics has issued recently: high on action, low on plot and character development.
Victor Garber made the movie.
2009-10-25 - I have never cared for the Green Lantern Corps--as individuals or a galactic police force. That being said, Green Lantern First Flight was awesome. It was a good telling of Hal Jordan's story following the ring's selection of him.
The best part of the movie was Sinestro's dialogue. Victor Garber's portrayal of Sinestro raised the bar for animated comic-book, movie-villain voice-over actors. He demonstrated a strong understanding of the Sinestro character. With the exception of Michael Madsen, the other actors came across as voice-over amateurs.
Solid animated movie
2009-10-17 - This movie was a bit different than the comic, but was a solid retelling of Hal Jordans origin, as well as Sinestro's path to evil. I love the GL comic, and loved this too.
