Editorial Review:
Four adopted brothers come together to bury the woman who raised them. At the funeral, the brothers discover that their mother was murdered, and they look to seek revenge.
Description of Four Brothers [HD DVD]:
Bound by love for their slain adoptive mother, the brothers in Four Brothers form a unique quartet that gives John Singleton's film a razor's edge of redemption. It's a thin edge, to be sure, because while Singleton's urban Western pays homage to the Blaxpoitation films of the '70s (as he did with his remake of Shaft), it walks a fine line of credibility with a mythic vengeance plot (recalling John Wayne's 1965 hit The Sons of Katie Elder) that endorses violence as the last resort of a family under siege. When a saintly foster mother (Fionnula Flanagan) is gunned down in a convenience store, her only adopted sons (two white, two black, played respectively by Mark Wahlberg, Garrett Hedlund, Tyrese Gibson and Andre Benjamin) go after the killers, only to discover that their mother's death was not a random event. As they uncover a sticky web of criminal activity involving a local kingpin (Chiwitel Ejiofor), the character-driven plot races toward an inevitable showdown, with ex-con Wahlberg leading the way. Making excellent use of blue collar locations in Detroit, Singleton keeps the action moving fast enough that the film's lack of realism is easily ignored, and the well-drawn characters (including Terrence Howard as a tenacious detective) lend emotional dimension to an otherwise familiar revenge scenario. Four Brothers is manipulative, but it's filled with grace notes of rugged working-class humanity, and it definitely holds your attention. --Jeff Shannon
Four Brothers [HD DVD] Reviews:
great action movie!!!!
2009-09-22 - I'm surprised to see this movie with an average review of 3 and a half stars. This is a great movie with lots of action and a great story line! Plus Mark Wahlberg is in it, and he really doesn't make a bad movie! There are some really cool guns in the movie, and a very awesome shootout that lasts about 5 minutes. If you like lots of action including fist fights, and gun action, you will really like this movie. The only reason this movie didn't get 5 stars in my opinion is that some of the actors could have done a better job in playing their character. But Mark Wahlberg is very good! rated R for violence and language.
Excellent
2009-08-30 - Sipping was on time and the product was as specified. No problems with this merchandise. I will be going back to this vendor for more.
Four Brothers is a 4 Star DVD
2009-07-24 - Four Brothers takes the drama to your TV. When I bought this movie I thought there was going to be more action in it but it was more of a thriller, action and drama mixed into one. All four main actors delivered and I liked the fact that the mixed up the race 2 whites and blacks so it made the movie have different personalities and backgrounds. Also each brother had a different background but I thought it was cool how each brother was there to have each other's back. Even after the one brother ended up getting killed that's when they really came together. Lots of good fighting and action scenes I liked the end when they decided to bury the guy alive under the ice. Overall four brothers is a great movie and if you can pick it up for $9.99 that would be a good pick up and I'll go with 4 out of 5 stars DVD.
One for All and All for One
2009-02-13 - They have returned back home to gloomy freezing cold at winter Detroit for their mother's funeral. She was shot in what seemed a random robbery-gone-wrong in a convenient store. There were four brothers even though they did not resemble each other a bit. All four were adopted by a murdered woman many years ago when she was a social worker and tried to find new homes for the children from dysfunctional families. Nobody wanted those four. She did. She took them in, brought them up, gave them love and support and they called her mom and themselves - brothers. Now she is dead, and the brothers start their own investigation on the dirty and often deadly streets of their childhood city to find those who were behind the murder. Very soon they discover that the robbery was a cover up for a hit murder. Someone wanted their mother dead and paid for her murder. Four brothers Mercer, Bobby (Mark Wahlberg), the leader, the oldest, toughest, short- tempered, and stubborn; Jeremiah (Andre Benjamin), the only family man of four who had taken care of the mother the last years; Angel (Tyres Gibson), the sexy one, and Jack (Garrett Hedlund), the youngest, whom three older brothers try to protect, are determined to avenge their mother's death no matter what it would cost. The film was directed by John Singleton as an urban thriller -revenge movie which is also a family drama, and I like it very much. It is violent, gritty, it moves well, it's got many plot turns on its way, it is packed with very effective dynamic action scenes, and acting is very good by all principal players. I was especially impressed by Chiwetel Ejiofor's turn as Victor Sweet, the pure evil despite his name. Ejifor said once, "I like to disappear into a role. I equate the success of it with a feeling of being chemically changed". The actor whom I first noticed in a compelling role of an illegal immigrant in London in the film Dirty Pretty Things (2002), was frightening in Four Brothers. I am also becoming a fan of Mark Wahlberg. He's got charisma and screen presence. The film does not fail to provide some humor, to show how much the four brothers mean to one another, and what the woman whom they lost meant to them. I missed the movie when it was released and actually did not know anything about it until this evening when its opening scene grabbed my attention; I began watching and did not leave until the credits started rolling.
A bit of trivia: John Singleton is the youngest Oscar nominated director. He received the honors at the age of 24 after completing and releasing his directorial debut, the phenomenal Boyz n the Hood (1991) which was based on his own childhood in a LA ghetto. Where do you move if you start your career on such high note? Four Brothers may not be as great as Boyz n the Hood but it is a darn good and entertaining film.
My Favorite movie yet!
2009-02-05 - I love this movie! It's packed with so much action, drama, and hot boys. :)
