  • Editorial Review:
Uma Thurman is painful to watch in Hysterical Blindness--and that's a compliment. Thurman completely gives herself over to her trashy character, a pathetically self-deluding good-time girl who hangs out in a tavern in Bayonne, New Jersey, circa 1987. She occupies the bar stool next to her best bud (a dead-on Juliette Lewis), willing herself to believe that an obviously indifferent pick-up is Mr. Right. Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding) directed this familiar but nicely-rendered HBO production; her visual style, full of obscured sightlines and opaque glass, emphasizes the heroine's inability to see clearly. Gena Rowlands and Ben Gazzara, as Thurman's mom and her gentleman suitor, add an echo of Cassavetes realism. But it's Thurman's tour de force, capturing the kind of lost soul whose idea of first-date chat is to break an awkward silence by boasting about her best sexual skill. She will make you cringe. --Robert Horton

    Hysterical Blindness Reviews:
excellent character study movie 5 Star Review
2009-09-03 - great movie that disects the personalities of the stars. A study of 3 people that have some real serious emotional issues. Two of them know it and the third doesnt.

If you want upbeat, forget it 4 Star Review
2009-08-19 - A fine, albeit grim, and realistic portrait of two young women in the 1980s who are not among the lucky ones. Rings true. I found the story and performances engrossing. Uma Thurman's character is complex and leaves an impression, like someone you have known in your life. The chaos of a desperate and hopeless fog developing into a partly cloudy day, with just the slightest glimmer of hope, is the paltry emotional pay-off of this film. Not enough for everyone I think. If you greatly value answers, closure, and/or happy endings in a film, I think you'll want to bypass this one. Only hopelessly serious drama fans need apply.

I love this movie, that's why I had to own it! 4 Star Review
2009-05-28 - I like the story, the music, the actors...
I thought the story was bittersweet or maybe kind of sad, the guy didn't show up for the dinner, how rude of him.

    Quick Service! 5 Star Review
2009-02-10 - Great speedy service, wrapped very well and arrived in new condition. Definitely buy from this seller!

Way good! Watch this 5 Star Review
2008-12-28 - Sure, it's essentially a soap opera, but the acting and writing are superb. HBO does it again. Uma Thurman is great, so is Juliette Lewis and so are Gena Rowlands and Ben Gazzara. Everything works here. The cheesy DVD cover doesn't do this justice.
