Editorial Review:
Firefighter Patrick Sullivan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) finds his life turned upside-down when his fiancée suddenly calls off their pending nuptials per the recommendation of radio love guru Dr. Emma Lloyd (Uma Thurman). Determined to get back at this "love doctor," Sullivan forges a fake marriage license, "accidentally" marrying him to Emma, who's already engaged to Richard (Colin Firth). But as Patrick's charms begin to wear Emma down, she must decide which of these bachelors is her "Mr. Right." Also starring Sam Shepard, Justina Machado and Isabella Rossellini in this romantic comedy that proves even the experts need to learn a few love lessons now and then.
Description of The Accidental Husband:
Doctor, heal thyself! That's the wry message underscoring the charming romantic comedy The Accidental Husband, which features Uma Thurman as Emma, a radio "love doctor" who can't quite seem to manage her own love life off the air. The cast is splendid, led by Thurman, who has rarely gotten to show her comic chops, and who really is very funny and has a gift for physical comedy as well. The two bachelors whose lives are accidentally (on purpose?) entangled with hers are played by two dreamboats, Jeffrey Dean Morgan (rugged firefighter Patrick) and Colin Firth (her fiancé, Richard). The chemistry between Emma and both suitors is crackling and captured well on film by director Griffin Dunne. Thurman, Morgan, and Firth are joined by a supporting cast every bit as spot-on as they are: Sam Shepard, Brooke Adams, Isabella Rossellini, Sarita Choudhury, and Keir Dullea, each of whom brings his or her own quirks and charms. The Accidental Husband is very much in the mode of Four Weddings and a Funeral and the Bridget Jones films--which is to say, make a date with it for your next date night. --A.T. Hurley
The Accidental Husband Reviews:
Good acting, horrible story.
2009-11-21 - This is supposed to be a romantic comedy. It isn't very funny, and frankly, it isn't terribly romantic either. The script for the movie focuses too much on trying to create funny scenes and not enough on character and plot development. It's almost as if the movie expects viewers to be so acquainted with the typical romantic comedy plots that it cuts corners and jumps straight to some scenes with no buildup. If you are willing to make these mental jumps, you might like this movie. If not, it may seem kind of clunky. All three of the actors doing the main characters do a pretty nice job of acting here and in spite of a few embarrassingly dumb scenes, they shine in this movie.
The plot centers around a fireman whose life is ruined when his fiancee listens to a local radio love doctor and breaks off the marriage. To get back, he has his teenage computer hacker neighbor create a fake marriage certificate that shows she is married to him. As the radio show doctor tries to get an annulment, the two have to hang out in many situations and end up finding out they enjoy each other's company. There is never really a lot of conflict between the two that you would expect in this kind of situation and it doesn't seem terribly apparent why she would leave her own fiancee, who seems like Mr. perfect, but I guess that's what has to happen in this kind of movie. This is most definitely a mediocre movie in many ways, but it's watchable and if you are an Uma Thurman fan you might want to check it out.
This is formula well done; do I see a touch of the real Uma, in this film?
2009-11-21 - Dr. Emma Lloyd, talk show love Dr. is at the top of her form. She leads a perfect life and is engaged to the proper man. As she wrote the book, she should know. However, what is this? She is already married. How could this happen and why?
We follow him his life as she rediscovers her values her father and her accidental husband.
A great surprise in watching this film was all of the incidental actors, one of which is Isabella Rossellini who is best known for her "Green Porno" (2008 TV series).
Parts of the movie are the quasi-Indian culture scenes. I wonder if this was due to Uma's influence. Extras she blames Griffin Dunne - Director for the sub-plot.

Any way you are going to want to see this film. Unfortunately, the standard DV came out before Blu-ray.

Not as Good as I was Expecting!
2009-11-18 - I thought the movie would be a lot better than it was. I didn't think Uma Thurman fit the part very well, and I don't think she had much chemistry with Colin Firth or Dean Morgan. It wasn't a terrible movie, but not a movie I would watch again.
I'd rather watch a test pattern.
2009-11-14 - At least, with an television broadcast test pattern you get a sound that's in tune. The soundtrack to this movie turned an otherwise mediocre dull, girl-falls-for-the-other-guy-for-no-good-reason "love story" into a "Where did I put the earplugs; I can't find the MUTE button fast enough" monotone singing, American-Idol rejects eppisode. William Hung has a better voice than whomever sang that hiddeous tune played throught, and after this movie. If the music was better I'd give it ONE more star. But it lost a star because I can't get the pain of that noise out of my head now! Save yourself the time and watch the brittish classic "I'm alright Jack". At least you can get an education from that movie, where you can't from this one.
fluffy chick flick
2009-11-14 - I needed something non-challenging to watch last night so I rented this DVD. It's fairly formulaic and, unless you're in the mood for this type of film, could be boring, but I enjoyed it. I love Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and he's charming in this film. He plays the part perfectly, with a roguish glint in his eye. Colin Firth is good as the boring and predictable fiance and Uma Thurman handles her first romanti comedy role deftly. The writing is so-so, but the cinematography is gorgeous. I won't summarize the plot; other reviewers have already done that. This isn't the best romantic comedy out there, but it's more than adequate as a fun film. JDM has the potential to be a major romantic comedy star.
