Editorial Review: Set in Australia in the first half of the 20th century and in the Mediterranean during the Second World War, About Jack Usher tells the story of a foundling born in Sydney in 1915 who becomes a soldier in the Australian army. The novel opens just before the First World War, with the rise to fortune of Ada, a cunning and opportunistic young woman of Irish convict stock on both sides of her family. Moving to Sydney and establishing herself quickly as a businesswoman, Ada marries and gains control over an orphanage. When a new foundling is brought in, Ada shows signs of affection towards the baby, which she quickly suppresses. The baby is given the name John Usher after the name of the hotel where he was found. As an army sergeant, Jack Usher leads a platoon of raw recruits to Palestine in 1941, before embarking on a rapid succession of shifts including Egypt, Cyrenaica, Tobruk and El Alamein experiencing the dramas, tragedies, confusions, dangers and petty absurdities of an army at war. |
