I Love the book. It makes a lot of sense. It's great when you're in the heat of the moment and you remember some of the stuff you read and put it in action.
It is an excellent book - it has rocked my world as I think about parenting my children - so good - has helped me think about "me" & how I react to my children - I totally recommend this for all stages of parenting - from newborn to teenagers - I wished I'd had this earlier!
Very disappointing 
2009-10-18 - I was so keen for this book to arrive and was so VERY DISAPPOINTED after I read it. If you are after a shallow book that just skims over parenting teens, want a book that is riddled with photos of celebrity teens(think Britney Speras, Miley Cyrus and evn Will Smith's 3 kids) for reasons not even related to the chapter in which they appear, and want a "Horoscope for Everyone"" included as the last chapter with the most INAPPROPRIATE comments(eg." ëxcellent kisser...good kisser...16 years of bad luck if you do not forward...loves to make out...MOST AMAZING KISSER(they put it in capitals, not me!)..someone loves them right now...they perfected sex and do it often...kinda dumb at times...Amazing in bed!!!(they put in the exclamation marks not me)then this book is for you.
If you want REAL help with your teens then purchase something, ANYTHING, other than this.
Simply Awesome, Humane and realistic parenting with lots of love!

I have been reading parenting books for years. The book teaches how parents can assist instead of disrupting the child's natural process of learning. Permit a child the consequences of their own mistakes when they are young and they will learn not to make big, life changing mistakes when they are adults. Become a friend and respected confidant to your child whose opinion he respects. There are excellent, real life accounts of how to apply the techniques.
To avoid a power struggle with my son who didn't want to put on his clothes or coat for a 5 minute ride home from my sister's house, I used Parenteen principles. On a cold January evening I carried him to the car in his underwear. Moments later, he said, "I'm cold." I simply kept driving and said, ... Perhaps next time you will make a different choice?" A natural instinct would be to cover him up and protect him from the cold. He was not injured in any way. By sticking to the principle, however, he learned two very important lessons: 1) mom is not kidding around, and 2) it's smart to wear your clothes and a coat. Since that evening, we have not struggled to get dressed. Try it!
The philosophies of authors are very similar--offering many sanity saving alternatives to yelling, bribing, threatening, criticing, and nagging that we often resort to at our wits' end. This book is helpful, humorous and worth keeping handy for when you need some quick advice or just some empathy on one of those really bad days when you think you are about to lose your mind!
Extremely helpful
2009-01-22 - As the parents of 3 adolescents with some significant cultural struggles, this book was is so helpful in changing our parenting techniques from being the authorities to being more "consultants."
There's an incredible relief when the responsibility for making decisions belongs to the teen, and the consequences of the decisions also belongs to the teen. I recommend this book as training in parenting for those of us who think we know how to raise teens, but find our teens are struggling, and it's clear we DON'T know how to do it..
