Editorial Review:
Okay, you knew everyone in high school was just a little different: everyone looked at you strangely, the teachers were freaky, and you never could find the right groove to fit into. What if it turned out that it was all because your school was inhabited by creepy aliens from outer space? That's the enjoyably cheesy B-premise for this fun and scary flick from the pen of Scream's Kevin Williamson, the master of the post-modern teen horror film. Directed by Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi), it's The Breakfast Club meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers, as six disparate students from Herrington High School band together when they discover that an alien life form is invading both the student and faculty bodies, with plans to take over the world.
Each of the heroes represents a different high school type: popular babe (Jordana Brewster), picked-on geek (Elijah Wood), goth girl (Clea DuVall), sensitive jock (Shawn Hatosy), new kid in town (Laura Harris), and bad-boy rebel (Josh Hartnett). The plot isn't much--a basic kill-or-be-killed premise spiked with a healthy shot of paranoia--but Willliamson and Rodriguez do a great job of building the tension slowly but surely. The suspense set pieces are genuinely frightening, and the film pokes fun at itself without deflating its scares; Williamson is a master at shifting gears from comedy to horror quickly and adroitly. The young cast doesn't have a weak link among them (with special kudos to Wood, DuVall and heartthrob-in-the-making Hartnett), and Rodriguez gets maximum mileage from the titular faculty, which includes Jon Stewart, Piper Laurie, Salma Hayek, Bebe Neuwirth, and Robert Patrick of Terminator 2. Go to the head of the class, Mr. Williamson. --Mark Englehart
The Faculty [Region 2] Reviews:
I'm Very Pleased
2008-09-29 - I bought this DVD on Saterday & recieved it in the mail on Monday. Not only was I pleased because I got it so quick but because it played in the DVD player great. I definitely would recommend amazon.com to any movie lover.
Great Sci-fi Flick of its time
2008-08-28 - Usually movies about aliens don't appeal well to me, but this is the only major exception. It's great for a sci-fi movie of its time, and it never gets old. Hopefully someday they'll release it with the deleted scenes!
So We Have The 137th Remake Of "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers"
2008-08-12 - So we have another film from the guy that wrote "Scream", Kevin Williamson. I'm starting to think we have a "one hit wonder" on our hands, again. Sure, "Scream" was a pretty good thrill ride, but anything this guy wrote after "Scream 2" is pretty much a remake of everything else that has already been done. "Cursed" is every other werewolf movie that's already been done, why not do another "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers"? Sorry, but this film is almost decent at best. Like I said, it's just another remake with a high school twist. I don't think I'll be seeing this again any time soon.
Decent sci-fi thriller.
2008-07-19 - The Faculty starring Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood, and Clea Duvall is a pretty good film about aliens. The ending is a little out there but overall I thought the special effects and music chosen for this film was cool. This film mostly takes place in high school so expect characters who are labeled as jock, pretty girl, nerd, and rebel. Give this underrated film a viewing, enjoy!
should be a classic of some kind
2008-07-09 - I love this movie so worth getting shipped here, it's got everything except tear jerking moments (thankfully). It makes you hate people, laugh and jump once in a while. To me this is like the scream of invasion movies.
